The short answer
On Bosch HIS ovens a door and seal fault is usually reported as a cooking problem rather than a door problem. Heat escaping along one edge browns unevenly, slows the oven and heats the front of the appliance. The checks on the eight models below are all visual and tactile, and they cost nothing.
What you observe on these models
- The door drops or feels loose on its hinges — Hinges settle over years, and a door that no longer sits square cannot seal however good the gasket is.
- Condensation or haze between the glass panes — The glass assembly rather than the seal, and it does not usually affect cooking.
- The door needs a push to latch — Alignment, and it is what makes locks and cycle starts intermittent.
- A draught or heat felt at the handle during use — The simplest confirmation that heat is leaving the door line.

Causes, most likely first on the HIS family
- Gasket hardened, flattened or displaced — First on the HIS family. A gasket is a consumable: it compresses a little more each year, hardens with every high-temperature cycle, and eventually stops springing back. Corners go first.
- Hinges that have settled — Second. A door that has dropped a fraction cannot seal along its top edge no matter how good the gasket is, and it also makes the latch and lock less reliable.
- Door alignment after a knock or a heavy load on the open door — Third. Oven doors are used as shelves, and the weight bends what holds them square.
- Glass assembly and inner panel fixings — Last. Misting between panes looks alarming and rarely affects cooking; loose inner panel fixings change how the door meets the frame.
Check in this order, and why
- First: the paper test, all the way round — Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull. Repeat at several points. Anywhere it slides out freely is a place the seal is not gripping.
- Second: look along the door line at eye level — With the oven cold and closed. A gap at one corner is visible from the side and tells you which hinge has settled.
- Third: feel the front during a preheat — Heat at the handle or along one edge confirms where the loss is happening.
- Fourth: inspect the gasket by hand — Cold oven. Press it: it should spring back. Hard, flat or torn at a corner is a gasket at the end of its life.

Safety
Work only on a cold appliance, and isolate it at the breaker before removing anything; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Oven door hinges store energy - treat a door that has been taken off its hinges as a trap rather than a panel. If the inner glass is cracked, stop using the oven rather than working around it.
