The short answer
On a Blomberg the usual ice complaint is frost forming where it should not, which points at the defrost cycle or at humid air entering past a door seal. If your model has a plumbed icemaker and it has stopped, the supply and the freezer temperature come before the icemaker itself. Neither complaint starts with the sealed system.
What you observe
- A solid frost sheet on the freezer rear wall — Not a light dusting but a layer covering the air openings.
- Ice building under the freezer drawer — The drawer stops closing fully, which lets in more humid air and worsens it.
- A slab of ice in the base of the fresh-food compartment — Water that should have drained away froze at the lowest point instead.
- An icemaker that fills but produces nothing, or hollow cubes — Both point at supply pressure or temperature rather than the mechanism.
- NEAR MISS - light frost that comes and goes — Normal on a fan-cooled cabinet in a humid kitchen. Frost matters when it blocks the airway.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A defrost cycle falling behind — First for the frost complaint. Every fan-cooled cabinet ices its evaporator constantly and melts it clear on a schedule; when that stops, ice accumulates on the freezer rear wall and cooling falls off as the airway closes.
- A door left ajar, or a seal that no longer pulls it shut — Second, and often the real cause behind the first. Humid room air deposits moisture as frost on the coldest surface available, and heavy doors will not self-close on a cabinet that is not tilted back slightly.
- A blocked defrost drain — Third, and the cause of ice in the wrong places. Meltwater should run into a tray above the compressor; when the drain silts up it backs into the cabinet and freezes where it stands.
- A freezer that is not cold enough for the icemaker — Fourth, plumbed models only. An icemaker will not harvest until the mould is cold enough, so a freezer running warm makes nothing while looking frozen.
- A restricted water supply to the icemaker — Fifth, plumbed models only. A half-closed valve or silted inlet screen gives small or hollow cubes before it gives none.
Check in this order, and why
- Decide which complaint you have — Frost where it should not be, or an icemaker that has stopped. The lists do not overlap.
- Look at the freezer rear wall — A frost sheet there is the defrost answer, visible without tools.
- Check the drain outlet at the base of the freezer — The ice slab in the wrong place is nearly always this.
- Test the seals and whether the doors self-close — A door that will not pull itself shut feeds every frost fault here.
What an owner can safely check
- Move the food out and defrost the cabinet completely — Doors open, power off, towels down. Let every trace of ice melt.
Tools: towels, cool boxAbout 90 min
- Clear the defrost drain at the back of the freezer floor — Flush gently with warm water until it runs freely into the tray above the compressor.
Tools: warm water, soft tubeAbout 30 min
- Test each seal and set the cabinet tilt — Front feet slightly higher than the back, so the doors swing closed on their own.
Tools: paper, adjustable wrenchAbout 25 min
- Check the freezer is genuinely cold enough — A freezer holds food safely at 0 degrees Fahrenheit or below, and an icemaker needs that before it will harvest.
Tools: fridge thermometerAbout 20 min
- Open the supply valve fully and clean the inlet screen — Plumbed models only. Close the valve, disconnect at the machine, rinse the screen, reconnect.
Tools: adjustable wrench, brushAbout 25 min
- STOP HERE if frost returns within days of a full defrost — That means a defrost component behind the rear panel.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator before removing any panel - a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the defrost heater sits directly behind the freezer rear wall. Never chip ice with a knife: the evaporator tubing is soft aluminium and a puncture ends the appliance. Close the water shut-off valve before disturbing any supply line.
When to call a technician
Call when a complete defrost restores everything and the frost sheet returns within a week or two: that is the defrost heater, its sensor or its control. Call as well when the drain has been flushed and water still freezes in the cabinet, and for a plumbed icemaker once the supply is proven good and the freezer genuinely cold.

What this page does not cover
This page treats Blomberg refrigerators, the brand many owners spell Bloomberg, as one class; where a page exists for your specific family it is linked below and is the more precise answer, particularly on whether your cabinet has an icemaker at all. Deliberately absent: defrost timings, heater part identifiers, water pressure requirements and cube output figures.
