The short answer
A leaking DW machine narrows quickly once you know when the water appears. During fill points at the supply connection; during the wash at the door seal; during drain at the hose or the waste; at rest at a fitting under standing pressure.
What you observe
- A slow puddle with the machine switched off — A fitting weeping under standing pressure. It is the only pattern that continues with the machine dead.
- Water at the back, near the connections — The inlet fitting or the drain connection. That is where everything that carries pressure lives.
- Foam rather than clear water — Too much detergent, or the wrong product. Suds escape past seals that water never would.
- Water appears only while the machine fills — The supply side is pressurised only then, so a fitting or the inlet valve is the cause.
Causes, most likely first
- The door seal, or a door that is not latching square — First on this family. The seal runs the whole way round a door that is opened and loaded constantly, and a strand of debris on it, or a latch that has drifted, puts water on the floor at the front on every wash.
- Loading that redirects the spray at the door — Second, and the one owners least expect. A tall tray or a pan set against the door turns the spray straight at the seal, and the same machine leaks on one load and not the next.
- Overfilling from a float or level device that is stuck — A machine that takes more water than the cycle wants will put the excess out at the door. Debris around the float is the usual reason.
- Excess detergent, or the wrong product entirely — Suds climb past seals that water never reaches. Anything that is not dishwasher detergent will do this on the first cycle it is used.
Check in this order
- Wipe the door seal all the way round and check for debris or damage — The leading cause on this family, and a cloth is the only equipment needed.
- Rerun the same wash with the tall items moved away from the door — Separates loading from a seal fault without replacing anything.
- Watch the drain connection while the machine empties — Only the drain step pressurises it, so it has to be watched at the right moment.
- Dry everything, put paper at the front and back, and run a cycle — Front and back are two different faults.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Dry the floor before kneeling to work, and check whether water has reached a cabinet base or a floor below before running the machine again.
