The parts list here is short and largely mechanical, which makes the diagnosis physical rather than electronic. Nearly all of this is free to check and needs no tool at all.
The problem classes and how to recognise them
- Nothing happens when you press start — A door switch, supply or protector condition. See the page on a machine that will not start.
- Burning smell, scorching or a tripping breaker — An electrical warning sign. Isolate and see the electrical-safety page.
- It runs but does not heat — A heating circuit or thermal protection fault.
- Cycles take much longer than they used to — Airflow: the filter, the duct, or a worn door seal.
- Lint escaping around the door — A seal or door alignment fault.

- Airflow restriction — Most likely here. Airflow leads because lint is produced every cycle, collects out of sight, and causes faults that look like component failures. Lint filters and duct runs. The most common cause of long cycles, overheating and opened thermal protection.
- Start and door-switch faults — Next most likely. Door switches, supply problems and protectors that have opened.
- Heating and thermostat faults — Third in the order. Elements, thermostats and cut-outs, frequently opened by an airflow problem rather than failing on their own.
- Noise from the drum — Then this one. Rollers, belts and seals.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never bypass a thermal cut-out or a door switch, never run the machine with its vent disconnected, and stop using a dryer that smells of burning.
Where owner work ends
Anything that smells of burning, scorches a connection or trips a breaker is a service call and the machine should be isolated until it is seen. Lint filters, duct runs and door seals are owner work and they resolve most of the performance complaints on this list. If the machine has been moved recently, say so.
What is out of scope
This page is generalized across every Black+Decker dryer family and model line. It does not identify your cabinet by model number, and it does not carry anything that changes between families: wiring colours, connector positions, torque figures, part numbers, service-mode entry sequences or error-code tables.
