The short answer
A Black+Decker countertop dishwasher that will not start is usually short of one of three things: power at the outlet, a properly latched door, or water in the tank or at the tap. All three are established in a minute without tools. A door switch or control fault is possible but sits last.
What you observe
- Nothing at all when start is pressed — No lights, no fill, no sound.
- The panel lights and nothing follows — Power is present and a condition is not satisfied.
- It beeps and refuses, or shows a warning — A deliberate refusal, usually the door or the water.
- NEAR MISS — it starts then stops part-way — That is a cycle fault and belongs on the drainage page.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- No power at the outlet — First on a portable appliance, because it is unplugged and moved constantly and it shares kitchen outlets with high-draw appliances. A dark panel is almost always this.
- The door not latching — Second: a small latch has to close a switch, and a rack rail standing proud or a plate leaning on the door leaves it just short while the door looks shut.
- No water at the tap or an empty reservoir — Third, and specific to this format. The machine waits at its first step, which looks exactly like not starting from across the kitchen.
- The door switch or the control — Last, and the only one needing a meter. On a countertop appliance it is also the point at which repair and replacement need comparing.
Check in this order, and why
- Test the outlet with another small appliance — It settles the dark-panel case immediately.
- Re-seat the rack and close the door firmly — Listen for the latch; a proud rail is the classic cause.
- Check the tap is open or the reservoir is full — On this format that is a genuine start condition.
- Only then treat it as a switch or control fault — That is a meter job inside a small sealed appliance.
What an owner can safely check
- Plug the machine directly into a wall outlet — Remove any extension lead or multi-way adapter.
About 10 min
- Reset the breaker once if it has tripped — If it trips again, leave it off and stop.
About 5 min
- Re-seat the rack and close the door until it latches — Check nothing is leaning against the inside of the door.
About 10 min
- Open the tap fully or fill the reservoir — Check the inlet hose is not kinked behind the machine.
About 10 min
- STOP HERE if power, door and water are all good — Switch and control checks are a service call.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the machine before inspecting the latch or the tub — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the element stays hot after a cycle. Never defeat the door latch switch to make the machine run: it holds the door under cycle pressure and the water inside is hot. If the breaker trips whenever the machine is plugged in, leave it off.
When to call a technician
Call, or consider replacement, when the outlet is proven live, the door latches, water is available, and the machine still will not start. The remaining suspects are the door switch and the control board. On a countertop appliance, ask the part and labour price before agreeing to work, because it often approaches the price of a new machine.

This page covers Black+Decker countertop dishwashers as a class rather than one model. A family- or model-specific page carries what is deliberately absent here: door-switch and control part identifiers, tank capacities, programme timings and supply requirements.
