The short answer
Water around a MAS washer is most often a hose connection or the drain arrangement, not the tub. These machines get moved, and every move disturbs the fittings at the back, so the first job is establishing whether the water arrives under pressure or only while the machine drains.
What you observe
- The floor is wet at the back and dry at the front — Everything that connects is at the back. This is the pattern that points away from the tub entirely.
- Water from around the door or lid during a wash — The seal or the way the machine is loaded. On a front-loading model a trapped garment will do it every time.
- Water appears only while the machine empties — The drain hose, its connection or the standpipe backing up.
- Water over the top of the standpipe or sink — The house drain cannot take what the machine delivers. The machine is healthy.
Causes, most likely first
- An inlet hose or its washer at either end — First on this family. These machines are connected and disconnected far more often than a plumbed-in one, and the rubber washer inside the fitting is what pays for it.
- The drain hose connection or its route — Second. A hose that has been crushed behind a foot, or one that is no longer secured where it discharges, puts water on the floor only while the pump runs.
- Detergent drawer blocked or over-dosed — A drawer that cannot clear backs up over its lip. It looks alarming and it is almost always a cleaning and dosing matter rather than a fault.
- Door or lid seal, and how the machine is loaded — A garment trapped in the seal gives a leak on that wash and none on the next, which is why it is so often misread as intermittent. On a compact drum it is easy to do.
Check in this order
- Pull the detergent drawer out and clean it, then run a cycle — Settles the drawer and the dose in one move.
- Watch the standpipe while the machine drains — Last of the free checks, and it decides whether this is an appliance job at all.
- Dry everything and run a cycle, noting exactly when water appears — Fill, wash, drain and idle are four different faults.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Water on a floor around a powered machine is exactly what a breaker exists for - isolate at the breaker rather than reaching for a wet plug.

When to call
Call straight away if water is reaching a socket, a run of flooring or a floor below. Call sooner rather than later if the leak is under mains pressure at an inlet fitting, because that one does not stop when the machine does - shut the taps in the meantime.
