The short answer
On the BTLW models a refusal to start is most often the outlet, the interlock or a cycle that has not actually been started. All three cost nothing to check and all three come before anything that needs a panel off.
What you observe
- The panel lights but nothing happens when the cycle is started — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The interlock and the fill conditions are the first two suspects.
- No lights, no sound, nothing at all — A supply fault rather than a machine fault. Nothing inside the cabinet is worth suspecting until power is proven at the socket.
- Some functions work and others do nothing — Power and control are both present, so the fault is narrower than a start failure.
- It starts and then pauses within seconds — A fill condition not met, or an interlock dropping out.
Causes, most likely first
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — First on this family. A compact washer is portable and gets plugged into whatever is nearby, which means extension leads, shared circuits and worn sockets.
- A damaged cord or a failing plug — A portable machine drags its cord. Intermittent starting that changes when the cord is moved is this and nothing else - and it is a reason to stop using the machine until it is fixed.
- The lid or door interlock — Second. The machine will not run without proof the drum is closed, and an interlock that has been knocked, or a door that is not quite latching, produces exactly the symptom of a dead machine that has power.
- The control board or the start switch — Last. It is the expensive end and it is the least likely on this family.
Check in this order
- Confirm both taps are open and the hoses are not kinked — Cycles that will not begin without water look exactly like a machine ignoring the start button.
- Test the socket with something else you know works — First, because a portable machine gets plugged into the nearest outlet and that outlet is the leading suspect.
- Look at whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing else separates them as cleanly.
- Move the cord along its length while trying to start — Last of the free checks.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never defeat the lid or door interlock to make a machine start: it is the only thing that stops the drum with a hand in it.
