The short answer
A BPW washer that will not start is usually being stopped by something rather than failing. On this platform the two commonest are the supply at the outlet and the lid or door interlock, and both are checkable without a tool.
What you observe
- No lights, no sound, nothing at all — A supply fault rather than a machine fault. Nothing inside the cabinet is worth suspecting until power is proven at the socket.
- The panel lights but nothing happens when the cycle is started — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The interlock and the fill conditions are the first two suspects.
- It hums or clicks and then stops — Something is trying and not turning. On a light machine a locked drum or a jammed pump will do this.
- It trips the breaker the moment it is switched on — A short rather than a start fault, and the one symptom here that means stopping immediately.
Causes, most likely first
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — First on this family. A compact washer is portable and gets plugged into whatever is nearby, which means extension leads, shared circuits and worn sockets.
- The control board or the start switch — Last. It is the expensive end and it is the least likely on this family.
- The lid or door interlock — Second. The machine will not run without proof the drum is closed, and an interlock that has been knocked, or a door that is not quite latching, produces exactly the symptom of a dead machine that has power.
- A cycle that has not actually been started — A paused control, a delay setting still running or a cycle selected but not confirmed will all leave a lit panel and a still machine. It sounds trivial and it accounts for a real share of calls.
Check in this order
- Test the socket with something else you know works — First, because a portable machine gets plugged into the nearest outlet and that outlet is the leading suspect.
- With the machine isolated, turn the drum by hand — A drum that will not move explains a hum and a stop without opening anything.
- Look at whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing else separates them as cleanly.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A standard US household branch circuit is fifteen or twenty amps at one hundred and twenty volts - if this machine trips its breaker the moment it is switched on, stop and have the circuit and the machine checked rather than resetting it repeatedly.

When to call
Call when the socket is proven good, the interlock latches, the taps are open, the drum turns freely and the machine still will not start. At that point the fault is the board, the start switch or the wiring, and all three are behind a panel.
