The short answer
On the BCW models a refusal to start is most often the outlet, the interlock or a cycle that has not actually been started. All three cost nothing to check and all three come before anything that needs a panel off.
What you observe
- It starts and then pauses within seconds — A fill condition not met, or an interlock dropping out.
- The panel lights but nothing happens when the cycle is started — Power is present and the machine is refusing. The interlock and the fill conditions are the first two suspects.
- It starts only if the lid or door is pressed hard — A marginal interlock, and that is a complete diagnosis on its own.
- No lights, no sound, nothing at all — A supply fault rather than a machine fault. Nothing inside the cabinet is worth suspecting until power is proven at the socket.
Causes, most likely first
- The outlet, the plug or the circuit feeding it — First on this family. A compact washer is portable and gets plugged into whatever is nearby, which means extension leads, shared circuits and worn sockets.
- A cycle that has not actually been started — A paused control, a delay setting still running or a cycle selected but not confirmed will all leave a lit panel and a still machine. It sounds trivial and it accounts for a real share of calls.
- The lid or door interlock — Second. The machine will not run without proof the drum is closed, and an interlock that has been knocked, or a door that is not quite latching, produces exactly the symptom of a dead machine that has power.
- Water not available at the machine — Many cycles will not begin without water. A tap left off after a move, or a hose kinked behind the machine, gives a machine that appears to ignore the start.
Check in this order
- Look at whether the panel lights at all — A dead panel and a lit one are two different halves of this list, and nothing else separates them as cleanly.
- Close the lid or door firmly and try again, then hold it and try again — A machine that starts when the lid is held is an interlock fault, and that is a complete result.
- Check the breaker for that circuit, and what else is on it — Second, and it also settles whether the machine has been sharing a circuit with something heavy.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never defeat the lid or door interlock to make a machine start: it is the only thing that stops the drum with a hand in it.
