The short answer
A Black+Decker BCED dryer that will not start splits by what happens when you press the button: complete silence is a power or door question, and a hum with no drum movement is a belt or a motor one. On these models the door switch leads — the machine is built not to run with the door open, and a switch that has drifted looks exactly like a dead dryer. Decide which noise you have before anything else. Settle the build before the ranking applies: these models divide on the lint filter in the door opening.
What you observe on these models
- Nothing at all — no lights, no sound — Check whether anything else on the same circuit has gone.
- The panel lights but nothing runs — Look for an icon you do not normally see.
- It hums but the drum does not turn — Turn the drum by hand with the power off and feel for free-spinning.
- A single click and then nothing — Often a door switch or a start switch making contact and the machine declining.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but never heats — Nothing here applies once the drum is turning.
Causes, ranked for the BCED build
- The door is not latching, or the door switch has drifted — It ranks first anywhere the panel lights up and the drum simply never moves. Press the door firmly shut while you press start — a cycle that begins names the latch.
- Power: the breaker, the outlet or the cord — It rises on an electric machine especially, where a double breaker can be half tripped. Switch a double breaker fully off and back on rather than nudging it.
- A broken belt, or a drum that has seized — It is ranked by pattern: the hum is what puts it here. A drum that will not turn at all is the more serious version.
- The start switch, the thermal fuse or the control board — Last of the five, because it is the only one that needs the cabinet open and the four above explain most cases. The reason a fuse opened matters more than the fuse.
The order that finds it fastest
- Test the latch and the strike by hand — Look for a worn strike or a catch that no longer clicks.
- Check the breaker fully, and the outlet — Switch a double breaker completely off and back on; a half-tripped pole looks perfectly normal.
- Turn the drum by hand with the power off — Power off first, always.

Power off first — unplug it, or trip the breaker where the machine has its own circuit. A standard household branch circuit is 15 A or 20 A at 120 V, and a large appliance circuit is typically 30 A or higher at 240 V, so an electric dryer usually has two poles to switch and both matter. On a gas model, if you smell gas, leave the building and call the gas utility or 911 from outside rather than hunting for it. Lint is what burns in a dryer: clear it rather than working around it.
When to call a technician
Call when the outlet is proved with something else and the machine is still dark, when the door is proved and it still refuses, or when the motor hums without the drum turning. Those leave the switch, the fuse, the belt and the motor, all behind the cabinet. If a thermal fuse turns out to be the cause, have the vent cleared at the same visit — the fuse is the symptom and the restriction is the fault.
