The answer, before the detail
A leaking Black+Decker BPD dishwasher is a timing puzzle more than a mechanical one. Dry the floor, run a cycle, and note the minute the water arrives — fill, wash or drain. That single observation ranks the causes below far better than any amount of looking underneath. The BPD key covers more than one build, and for this fault the difference shows in whether your unit has a machine plumbed in under the counter.
What the owner actually sees
- Water appearing along the door line — Door seal, door alignment or the detergent cup area — the parts that sit above that line.
- Foam or suds coming out of the door — Wrong detergent, too much of it, or something in the tub that foams — hand dish soap is the usual culprit.
- Water at the start of the cycle only — It is the only leak that is under mains pressure.
- Water that arrives when the machine drains — The drain hose or its connections, which only carry water for part of the cycle.
- Water from the side or the back of the cabinet — Look before pulling the machine out, because moving it hides the evidence.
- NEAR MISS — steam rather than water — Wipe it and see whether it returns as water or only as mist.

- Over-sudsing from the wrong detergent or too much of it — It also explains a leak that appeared for the first time after someone washed a pan by hand in the tub. Suds carry water out past a seal that is otherwise fine.
- The inlet valve, the supply fitting or the filter connection — This is the leak that does not wait for a cycle, which is why it is ranked here: mains pressure does not stop when the machine does.
- The drain hose or its connections — Mid-list and easy to place, because it only leaks while the machine drains and leaves the rest of the cycle dry.

- The sump, the pump seal or a tub fitting under the tub floor — Last of the five, because confirming it means getting under the machine and everything above it does not.
The order that finds it fastest
- Dry everything, then run a cycle and watch the clock — Watch from the front with the door closed; do not open a panel to observe.
- Rule out suds before anything else — Run two rinse cycles and see whether the leak goes with the foam.
- Run a finger round the door gasket — Hardened, flattened or food-crusted sections leak in one place, repeatedly.
- Dry and inspect the supply and drain connections — This is where a leak that is not at the door usually lives.

Switch the machine off at its breaker before reaching behind the kick plate or the door panel — water and mains wiring share the same small space in a dishwasher, and a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door latch and its switch exactly as they are: the machine is meant to stop the moment the door opens.
When to call a technician
Call when the leak is timed to fill or to drain and the connections you can reach are dry, and call at once if water is appearing from the centre underneath the machine. The condition is whether the fix is a clean, a clip or a foot — those are owner work — or a seal, a valve or a pump, which are not.
