The short answer
This page separates two faults that are reported the same way: a machine whose wash never gets hot, and a machine that washes hot but dries badly. Undissolved detergent tells you which one you have, and the two lead in opposite directions. On a Big Chill dishwasher, that reordering puts incoming water is not hot at the top.

- Once the wash itself is proven cold, the drying causes drop away and the ranking reorders around supply temperature, the element and the control. - Incoming water is not hot — Why: A machine fed cold water spends the cycle trying to heat it and never reaches the final rinse temperature that drying depends on.
- The heating element has failed — Why: A cold tub at the end of a cycle, undissolved detergent and a much longer cycle together point at the element.
- The control or the thermostat — Why: A control that never calls for heat, or a thermostat that reports the tub is already hot, gives the same cold tub as a failed element and is distinguished by a technician rather than by an owner.
- The heated-dry or extra-dry option is off — Why: Eco and quick programmes deliberately skip or shorten the heated dry, and a machine that recently had its default programme changed will behave exactly like a failed heater.
- Rinse aid is empty — Why: Drying depends on water sheeting off rather than beading.
- A blocked or stuck drying vent — Why: Machines that vent moist air need the vent to open.
What to check, and why in this order
- Free checks first, then the ones that need the machine opened.
- Settle the question this page is built around first: whether the wash itself is cold or only the drying is failing.
- Then check the programme: a quick or eco cycle deliberately skips heat, and that is a setting rather than a fault.

Before you start
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Nothing below asks you to put a meter on live terminals, and nothing below asks you to defeat a door switch or an interlock — those exist to cut power to something that would otherwise hurt you. If the plug, the cord or the outlet is warm, discoloured or smells hot, stop there and have the circuit looked at before you use the dishwasher again.
When to stop and call a technician
The line is whether the next step needs live testing, sealed-system access or a part you cannot verify. Call for anything under the trim that needs the door skin separated, and anything involving the sealed motor, or when:
