What this usually turns out to be
Noise is one of the few faults where listening carefully costs nothing and narrows the field almost completely. Where the sound comes from — freezer, back, base — matters more than what it sounds like. On the BC models the sounds worth separating are the fan noises from the compressor noises, because the two sit at opposite ends of the cabinet and the access to each is completely different.
Which noise you have
- A repetitive click every few minutes — A click every few minutes is a control doing its job. A click with a cabinet that has gone warm is worth reading differently.
- A knock or thump from low down at the back — The compressor area. A rhythmic knock from there is the one sound on this page worth acting on quickly.
- A squeal or chirp from the freezer side — A fan blade catching ice or a motor bearing complaining. It often stops when the door opens, which is itself a clue.
- Gurgling or a sound like running water — Gurgling and trickling are the machine working. They are most noticeable at night and most alarming to new owners.
- NEAR MISS — The noise is there but the cabinet has also gone warm — Noise together with a cabinet that is no longer cold usually means the noisy part is the part that has stopped working. Solve the temperature first.
The ranking that matters here
- The condenser fan at the back or under the base — A worn condenser fan bearing gives a steady grind or whirr that rises with the compressor and never changes when a door is opened. It is first because it is the most common source of new noise on the BC models and the easiest to confirm by ear. This is the departure from the brand-wide ranking: the condenser fan at the back or under the base moves ahead of the ice maker cycling on the BC models because it is confirmed by ear before anything is moved.
- The cabinet itself vibrating against floor, wall or contents — Bottles, trays and drip pans resonate. A large proportion of rattle complaints are solved by moving something, levelling a foot or pulling the machine forward.
- The evaporator fan inside the freezer — Because this fan is inside the insulated box, its noise reaches you through the cabinet and seems to come from everywhere — which is why opening the door to test it matters so much.
- A loose drain pan or a defrost drain that is running noisily — The sound is intermittent and tied to the defrost cycle, which makes it maddening to chase and trivially cheap to fix.
The order the checks belong in
- First — pull the base grille or rear cover and look at the condenser fan — With the machine unplugged, check the blade for dust, hair or a stray object, and spin it by hand for roughness. It is the easiest moving part on the machine to reach.
- Second — rock the cabinet and clear what is touching it — Pull it clear of the wall, check that every foot is on the floor and take the trays off the top. Any change in the noise while you do this is the diagnosis.
- Third — open the freezer while the noise is happening — The quickest test in the whole list: open the freezer mid-noise. Silence means the fan inside was making it.
- Fourth — reach the drain pan above the compressor and reseat it — With the power off, check the pan is in its clips and not resting against the chassis. A pan that buzzes intermittently mimics a far more serious fault.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before any cover comes off, and remember a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never hold the freezer door switch in to keep a fan running while your hands are near the blade, and do not chip ice off a fan with anything metal — the tubing behind it punctures easily.
Where the owner job ends
Call when the noise is a rhythmic knock from the compressor, when a fan has to come out to be freed, or when the noise arrives together with a cabinet that is no longer cold. Noise on its own is rarely urgent; noise plus warmth is.
