The short answer
Almost everything that goes wrong with a refrigerator falls into one of a handful of classes, and each class has a page of its own beneath this one. What follows names the class, tells you how to recognise it, and sends you to the page that covers it. A compact cabinet has very little margin: ambient temperature, clearance and the outlet it is plugged into all matter more than any component inside it. Do these in order and you will either fix it or hand a technician a much shorter problem.
The problem classes and how to recognise them
- Water inside the cabinet or on the floor — A defrost drain, a supply line or condensation. See the water-leak page.
- A new noise that was not there before — A fan, a panel, a mounting or a levelling fault. See the noise page.
- The panel is unresponsive or the display disagrees with the cabinet — A control, sensor or mode issue. See the control-fault page.
- Condensation or frost around the door — A seal or alignment fault. See the door-seal page.
Ranked causes
- Power and start-component faults — Most likely here. On a compact cabinet the supply side leads, because the appliance draws so little that installation problems dominate component failures. Supply problems, start relays and controls that never call for cooling. Cheap to rule out and frequently the whole answer.
- Cooling and airflow faults — Next most likely. Frosted evaporators, stopped fans, blanketed condensers and blocked vents. The largest single class of complaint on any cold appliance.
- Door, seal and alignment faults — Third in the order. Sagging doors and gaskets that have lost their set.
- Noise and vibration — Then this one. Fans against frost, loose panels and cabinets standing unlevel.
- Body: What follows is a frequency ordering without a denominator behind it. It says which class comes up most on this brand and appliance, not how much of the total any class represents.

Before you touch it
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Refrigerant work is licensed work and no part of it belongs in a kitchen.
When to call a technician
Anything on the sealed system, anything involving a scorched cord or a tripping breaker, and any leak from a pressurised water fitting is a service call from the outset. Airflow, drainage, seals, levelling, filters and mode settings are owner work, and between them they account for most of the complaints listed above. A diagnosis reached by elimination is worth acting on; one reached by guessing is not.
