The short answer
A rental-duty refrigerator that runs without cooling is most often blanketed in dust at its condenser, leaking cold through tired gaskets, or packed so tightly that air cannot circulate. All three are owner or occupant work. A stalled defrost comes next, and the sealed system is last and is the only case for a technician.
What you observe
- The cabinet is cool but not cold through the afternoon — The classic pattern of a condenser that cannot reject heat.
- The compressor runs almost continuously — It never satisfies its thermostat, so it never rests.
- The freezer is cold but the refrigerator section is not — Airflow between compartments is blocked, usually by ice.
- NEAR MISS — nothing runs and the light is out — That is a power fault rather than a cooling failure.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- A dust-blanketed condenser — First on a machine that has never been cleaned: the coil cannot shed heat through a mat of dust and pet hair, so the compressor runs continuously and still loses ground on a warm day.
- Worn or torn door gaskets — Second, and the mark of an appliance several people have used hard. A gasket that has hardened or torn at a corner lets warm humid air in all day and feeds ice as well.
- Contents packed against the vents — Third: on a top-freezer cabinet the cold reaches the fresh-food section through a vent, and a shelf packed to the back wall closes it. The symptom is a cold freezer with a warm refrigerator.
- A stalled defrost or a sealed-system fault — Last. Ice over the evaporator blocks the fan's airflow, and past that the diagnosis needs gauges and a licensed technician.
Check in this order, and why
- Pull the cabinet out and look at the condenser — It is the leading cause and it takes a minute to confirm.
- Test both gaskets with a sheet of paper all the way round — Corners and hinge sides fail first on a hard-used cabinet.
- Compare the two compartments — A cold freezer with a warm fridge points at blocked airflow or ice.
- Only then treat it as defrost or sealed-system — Both need panels off or gauges.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the refrigerator before cleaning the condenser or removing any interior panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the coil runs hot. Never chip or heat ice off an evaporator; the tubing is thin-walled and a puncture ends the cabinet. Treat moving a loaded cabinet as a two-person job and empty it first where possible.
When to call a technician
Call, or report it to whoever owns the appliance, when the condenser is clean, the gaskets seal, the vents are clear, a defrost has been tried, and the cabinet still will not hold temperature. A condenser that stays cold while the compressor runs points at the sealed system, which is licensed work. Move the food out now rather than waiting for a verdict.
