A washer left full of water almost always has something in the way rather than a failed pump, and the something is usually in the pump filter at the bottom front of the machine. That filter is designed to be opened by the owner.
What the owner observes
- The drum is full of water at the end of the cycle — The clearest version of the fault, and usually the filter.
- It drains but will not spin — Machines refuse to spin on a drum that has not emptied, so a partial drain looks like a spin fault.
- The pump hums or grinds and nothing moves — Something is jamming the impeller — a coin, a hair grip, a shirt button.
- NEAR MISS — Water on the floor rather than in the drum — That is a leak and the leak page covers it.
The ranking that matters here
- A blocked pump filter — It is the most common cause of a machine that will not drain, and it is the one part of the machine the manufacturer expects the owner to open. It is first because it is free, it is designed to be opened and it is usually the whole fault.
- A kinked or blocked drain hose — It is checked by disconnecting it into a bucket, which is messy but decisive.
- The standpipe or household waste — The tell is gurgling at the sink, or water backing up out of the standpipe when the machine drains.
What to check first, and why
- First — open the pump filter at the bottom front — Drain the machine through the small hose first, then unscrew the filter over a tray. Coins, grips and tissue in there are the fault, and clearing them is the repair.
- Second — check the drain hose behind the machine — Look for a crushed section where the machine was pushed back, then disconnect it into a bucket and see whether water runs freely.
- Third — check the standpipe and the household waste — Gurgling at the sink, or water rising out of the standpipe, means the fault is outside the machine and needs a plumber rather than an appliance technician.
What to do before you call anyone
- Drain the machine through the filter hose — Most machines have a small emergency drain hose beside the filter. Use a shallow tray and expect several trips — a full drum holds a lot of water.

- Open and clear the pump filter — Unscrew it, remove everything inside, rinse it and check the thread and seal before refitting. Do this over towels.

- Check the impeller turns freely — With the filter out, reach in carefully and turn the impeller. Anything jammed behind it explains a humming pump.

- STOP HERE if the pump has to come out or the pressure system is suspected — Removing a pump means tipping the machine with water in the system, and pressure-sensor work is inside the cabinet.
Power off before panels come off
Safety
Switch the washer off at the socket or its breaker and close both supply taps before any panel comes off or any hose is disturbed. A capacitor in the control can hold a charge after the power is off, and the drum can coast for a long time after a spin. Never reach into a moving drum or defeat the door lock on a front loader — it holds water as well as a door. A loaded machine is extremely heavy, so drain it before moving it.
When to call a technician
Book with what you found: what was in the filter, whether the pump hums or is silent, and whether the standpipe took a bucket of water. Those three answers separate an appliance fault from a plumbing one.
