Start here
A dryer that will not start divides at one question: does anything happen at all when you press start? Complete silence points at the supply or the door switch; a hum without movement points at the motor or a seized drum. On the BAMFC models the door switch is a small plunger in the opening, so a door that closes without a click is worth checking before anything electrical.
How this shows up
- It runs only while the start button is held — A start circuit or a centrifugal switch in the motor that is not latching.
- The drum turns but there is no heat — That is a heating fault rather than a starting one, and it has its own page.
- It stops as soon as the door is nudged — The door switch is marginal, which also explains a machine that sometimes will not begin.
- NEAR MISS — It starts and then stops partway through — That is a cycle fault, usually thermal, and it has its own page.
Causes, most likely first
- The door switch or latch — The everyday version is a machine that runs when the door is pressed and stops when it is nudged. It leads on the BAMFC models because it stops more of these machines than anything else on the list. The brand-generic page leads with the supply, breaker or a lost leg; on these models the door switch or latch takes that place.
- The supply, breaker or a lost leg — It is checked at the consumer unit and the socket in a couple of minutes.
- The start switch or the motor centrifugal switch — Both are inside the cabinet, which puts them past the owner line.
- A thermal fuse that has opened — On many dryers the thermal fuse is wired so that when it opens the machine will not start at all rather than simply running cold.
The order the checks belong in
- First — press the door firmly and try again — If the machine starts when the door is held closed, or stops when it is nudged, the switch or the latch is the fault and nothing else on this list matters yet. Each step removes a whole group of causes instead of testing the single most likely one.
- Second — check the breaker and the socket — On an electric dryer a half-tripped double breaker gives you odd half-working behaviour. Reset once, and if it trips again leave it off and book.
- Third — note whether it runs only while start is held — That single observation points at the start switch or the motor centrifugal switch, which is a much shorter list than "will not start".
- Fourth — ask whether the vent has ever been cleared — A machine that stopped dead after a period of poor drying is the classic open thermal fuse, and the blocked duct that opened it is still there.

Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor in the control can hold a charge after the power is off, and an electric dryer sits on a high-current circuit. Lint is the fire risk on this appliance: clean the filter every load and clear the vent duct regularly, and never run a dryer with the duct disconnected or crushed. On a gas model, leave the burner and the supply alone — that is licensed work — and if you smell gas, switch nothing, leave the building and call the gas utility or your emergency number from outside.
When this stops being a homeowner job
Book with the specifics: silence or hum, whether it runs while start is held, whether the drum turns freely by hand, and whether the vent has ever been cleared. Those four answers usually name the part.
