What this usually is
A Bertazzoni TBD refrigerator that makes no ice, or makes hollow and undersized cubes, is describing its fill. On this family that points first at the water path and only later at the ice maker itself, which is the reverse of the order most owners work in.
What you observe on these models
- Cubes are hollow, undersized or fused into a slab — The fill is arriving but not completing, which is a restriction rather than an absence.
- You hear the fill valve buzz but no water reaches the mould — The control is calling correctly and the water is not following. That narrows it to the valve, the line pressure or a frozen fill tube.
- Ice tastes or smells wrong even though production is normal — That is a filter, a line or a storage question rather than a production fault, and it is worth separating from the rest before you diagnose further.
- NEAR MISS — the freezer itself is not holding temperature — Slow or cloudy production with a freezer that feels soft is a cooling fault wearing an ice-maker costume.
Ranked causes on the TBD platform
- Water not reaching the cabinet at all — This dominates the list. A shut-off never fully reopened after some other job, a line flattened when the cabinet went back against the wall, or a filter long past its service life — each stops production completely, and from the front all three look exactly like a dead ice maker.
- Fill tube frozen closed — The second cause and the one that comes back. Once the flap seal at the mould is worn, freezer air tracks up the tube and freezes the next fill short of its destination.
- Inlet valve failed electrically or clogged on the screen — The first point on the path that needs a meter, which is why it sits below two checks that need nothing. A valve that buzzes and delivers nothing has either lost its solenoid or silted its inlet screen.
- Ice maker module, thermostat or mould heater — Real, and where most owners start. The module warms the mould to release a harvest and turns the ejector; a dead heater welds the cubes in and a dead motor never turns them out.
What to check first, second, third
- 1. Follow the water to the cabinet — Shut-off fully open, line not crushed behind the unit, filter within its life.
- 2. Look up the fill tube — Ice at the mould end is visible and clears with warm water.
- 3. Force a harvest and listen to what happens — A buzz with no water separates the valve from everything upstream.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. The ice maker harness is live whenever the cabinet is, and the ejector turns without warning during a harvest, so do not reach into the mould with power on.

Where the owner side ends
Call when the water path is confirmed good and the machine still produces nothing, because what remains is valve, module and control work that needs a meter and a service mode. Call earlier if you find water where it should not be — a leaking valve or a split line behind the cabinet is a flooding risk long before it is an ice problem. On this family the honest line is the fill: everything up to and including a frozen tube is owner work, and everything electrical past it is not.
