The short answer
On the RFD line, the most common reason a refrigerator is not cooling is airflow blocked by a frosted evaporator. On this page that cause is ranked ahead of temperature sensor or control board reading wrong, which is where the order departs from the brand-generic article above; the ranking below says what about this platform moved it. Only one of the causes below is owner-checkable without tools, and the last of them is a service call.
What you see on the RFD line
- Warm air coming off the back or the toe grille — Some heat there is normal. Air hot enough to be uncomfortable means the condenser is rejecting more heat than it can shed.
- Food spoiling faster than the display suggests it should — Trust a thermometer on a shelf over the panel reading; a failed sensor lies to the panel first and to you second.
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — The compressor hum is there and the light comes on, yet the air inside is no colder than the room after several hours.
- A sheet of frost on the freezer rear wall — Not the light dusting a freezer normally carries, but a continuous white slab over the panel that hides the evaporator.
- NEAR MISS — the unit is silent and the light is out — That is a power, cord or main-board fault, not a cooling fault, and it is a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the RFD line
- Airflow blocked by a frosted evaporator — Ice accumulates on the evaporator coil until air can no longer pass through it. Cooling capacity is still being made; it simply cannot reach the shelves, which is why the compressor runs on and on. It ranks first because the failure is gradual, silent and complete — the unit sounds perfect right up to the point where nothing in the cabinet is cold.
- Temperature sensor or control board reading wrong — Control faults produce contradictory evidence: a panel insisting on one temperature while a shelf thermometer reads another, or a defrost cycle that never starts. It sits low deliberately — a board is what gets replaced when the real fault was a five-minute check nobody made.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — A leak, a blockage or a compressor that no longer pumps ends cooling altogether. The motor may still hum, which is exactly why this cause is diagnosed last rather than first. It is last because it is the least likely of the group and the only one that is not an owner repair under any circumstances.
Check in this order, and why
- First: Look behind the freezer rear panel for a frost slab — Ice visible around the panel seams settles the question before any tool comes out. It comes first because it is the cheapest of the three to exclude and because everything below it is harder to read while it is unresolved.
- Second: Compare a shelf thermometer against the panel — Do this only after the airflow checks, or you will chase a reading that was correct all along.
- Third: Only after the checks above: is the condenser cold and the evaporator dry? — A condenser that never gets warm while the compressor runs points this way. Stop there and call.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is; it cuts the fan for a reason, and defeating it to watch the fan spin means putting a hand near a moving blade with power on. Never put a heat gun or a hair dryer against an evaporator to speed a defrost: the tubing behind it is thin, and one hole in it turns a cheap repair into a sealed-system job.

When to call a technician
The line is simple: anything you can reach with the power off and no meter is yours, and anything that needs a reading is not. If the unit has run continuously for a day without reaching temperature, stop running it and call, because every extra hour is time a struggling compressor spends at its limit.
