The short answer
On the REF line, the most common reason a refrigerator is not cooling is temperature sensor or control board reading wrong. On this page that cause is ranked ahead of airflow blocked by a frosted evaporator, which is where the order departs from the brand-generic article above; the ranking below says what about this platform moved it. Only one of the causes below is owner-checkable without tools, and the last of them is a service call.
What you see on the REF line
- The compressor runs and never cycles off — A healthy unit rests between cycles. One that never stops is trying to reach a temperature it cannot reach.
- Warm air coming off the back or the toe grille — Some heat there is normal. Air hot enough to be uncomfortable means the condenser is rejecting more heat than it can shed.
- Food spoiling faster than the display suggests it should — Trust a thermometer on a shelf over the panel reading; a failed sensor lies to the panel first and to you second.
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is clearly running — The compressor hum is there and the light comes on, yet the air inside is no colder than the room after several hours.
- NEAR MISS — it cools but rattles, hums or buzzes — A noise complaint on a unit that still reaches temperature belongs on the noise page for this appliance, not here.
Causes, most likely first on the REF line
- Temperature sensor or control board reading wrong — Control faults produce contradictory evidence: a panel insisting on one temperature while a shelf thermometer reads another, or a defrost cycle that never starts. 82 models sit under this family key. They are close enough relatives that a fault found on one is worth suspecting on the others.
- Airflow blocked by a frosted evaporator — Ice accumulates on the evaporator coil until air can no longer pass through it. Cooling capacity is still being made; it simply cannot reach the shelves, which is why the compressor runs on and on. It is the fault that produces exactly this pattern — a running unit and a warm cabinet — and it arrives slowly enough that nobody notices until the cabinet warms.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — A leak, a blockage or a compressor that no longer pumps ends cooling altogether. The motor may still hum, which is exactly why this cause is diagnosed last rather than first. It is last because it is the least likely of the group and the only one that is not an owner repair under any circumstances.
Check in this order, and why
- First: Compare a shelf thermometer against the panel — A wide disagreement between the two points at the sensing side rather than the cooling side. It comes first because it is the cheapest of the three to exclude and because everything below it is harder to read while it is unresolved.
- Second: Look behind the freezer rear panel for a frost slab — If the panel is cold to the touch and edged with ice, this is your cause and the rest of the list can wait.
- Third: Only after the checks above: is the condenser cold and the evaporator dry? — This is where owner diagnosis ends; refrigerant work is licensed work.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel; a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Keep sharp tools away from the evaporator and from the aluminium tubing under the liner — both are thin-walled, and a puncture vents the refrigerant charge in seconds. If you find oil where there should be none, stop: oil outside the tubing means the sealed system is open and the unit should be switched off rather than left running.

When to call a technician
Call once the airflow and condenser checks are clean, because everything left needs a meter on live terminals or gauges on the sealed system. Call immediately, without finishing the list, if you smell burning, see oil at the compressor or hear the compressor try to start and trip repeatedly — that pattern damages the part that is trying to start.
