The short answer
A Bertazzoni SMD microwave that runs but does not heat has almost always lost its high-voltage section — the magnetron, the diode, the capacitor or a thermal cut-out that has opened. What an owner actually sees
- The cabinet lights, the plate turns, the timer counts, and nothing heats — The textbook presentation. Control side normal, cooking side dead.
- A loud hum or buzz during the run with no heating — Often a failing diode or capacitor under load.
- Heats sometimes, then stops heating for a while — Suggests a thermal cut-out opening and resetting. Check the vents and the recess before assuming a component has failed outright.

What it usually turns out to be, in order
- Magnetron failed — First on this family and the classic cause. It is a wear item with a finite life, it fails without warning, and it produces exactly this symptom: everything normal except the heat.
- High-voltage diode or capacitor failed — Second. Either will stop the magnetron receiving what it needs, and a failing diode commonly adds the loud hum owners report.
- Thermal cut-out opened — Third, and the only cause with an owner-side contribution: blocked vents, a tight recess or a long run in a hot kitchen can open a protector that then resets on cooling. That produces the intermittent version of this symptom.
- Door interlock switch out of adjustment — Fourth. Some interlock faults stop the cooking circuit while leaving the control circuit alive, which mimics a magnetron failure exactly.
Check in this order, and why
- 1. Run the water test — A microwave-safe cup of cold water, a short run, then feel it. Never run the machine empty — with no load the energy has nowhere to go and the magnetron takes it. The SMD family is a single model number, so everything on this page applies to it without qualification.
