The short answer
Ice that will not form properly in a Benessi compact cabinet is nearly always a consequence of the single-dial design and the way the cabinet is used, not a broken part. There is no icemaker to fail. Ice across the freezer box, a box that cannot close and a dial chosen to protect salad are the three usual causes.
What you observe
- Trays take a day or more to freeze — The box is close to freezing rather than below it.
- Cubes come out soft, cloudy or stuck together — Slow freezing, or repeated partial thawing between door openings.
- The freezer box is coated in ice — The surface that should be freezing your tray is insulated by frost.
- NEAR MISS — nothing in the cabinet is cold — Then this is a cooling failure and ice is the first symptom you happened to notice.
Causes, most likely first on this brand
- Ice across the freezer box or cold plate — First, because these cabinets are manual-defrost and nobody defrosts them until something stops working. The ice insulates exactly the surface that makes your ice.
- The freezer box flap held open — Second: the flap is thin plastic on a simple hinge, and a tall tray or a frozen bag holds it open. The box then runs at fridge temperature and freezes nothing.
- A dial set for the fridge section — Third, and the trade-off nobody explains at purchase. A setting warm enough to keep salad from freezing is often too warm to make good ice in the box.
- Tray fill and placement — Fourth and easily overlooked: on a static cabinet the cold comes from contact with the surface, so a brimming tray on a shelf away from the plate freezes far more slowly than a shallow one against it.
Check in this order, and why
- Look at the box and plate for ice — The likeliest cause, and visible in a second.
- Shut the flap and see whether it stays shut — A flap held open explains the whole complaint.
- Note the dial position, then change it one step at a time — Give every change a full day before judging it.
- Move a shallow tray into direct contact with the cold surface — If that one freezes normally, placement was the fault.

- Defrost the box and the plate completely — Unplug the cabinet, empty it, and let the ice melt. Never chip at it.

Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the cabinet before defrosting the box — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip, scrape or lever ice off the freezer box or the cold plate: the tubing is bonded behind them and a single puncture ends the appliance. Do not use hot water or a hair dryer inside the cabinet; plastic at freezing temperature cracks under sudden heat.
When to call a technician
Call when the box has been defrosted, its flap closes, the dial is at a cold setting, the door seals, and trays still will not freeze solid overnight. That means the box is not reaching freezing temperature at all, which points at the thermostat or the sealed system and needs instruments. Call sooner if food in the fridge section is also warm.
