What you observe
- A drone that fills the room from a large cabinet — The rear panel resonating with the compressor - levelling or contact rather than a failed part.
- A whir that stops the instant a door is opened — A compartment fan, cut by the door switch, usually striking frost.
- A rattle from behind the cabinet — Tubing or a clip resting against the carcass.
- A crack or trickle once or twice a day — The defrost cycle: the liner moving, and meltwater running to the tray. Normal.
- NEAR MISS - noise with a compartment warming — A symptom of a cooling fault; the cooling page comes first.
Causes, most likely first on this family
- Uneven feet, more noticeable on the larger codes — First, because a bigger carcass turns a small rock into a room-filling drone.
- Contact at the back of the cabinet — Second. A large flat rear panel gives tubing and clips many places to rest.
- Hard flooring under a tall cabinet — Third, and not a fault. The same machine sounds different on tile and on timber.
- A compartment fan striking frost — Fourth, and the only cause that also threatens temperature.
- Compressor mounts hardened with age — Last, and the only cause needing the cabinet opened.
Check in this order, and why
- Press each top corner of the cabinet in turn — First, and worth more on the larger codes: a body that clicks or settles is standing on three feet.
- Open each compartment while the noise is happening — Second. The door switch cuts the fan, so a noise that stops is the fan.
- Run a hand down the rear panel while it runs — Third. Ease any tube or clip resting on the carcass away from it.
- Time any knock against the compressor — Fourth, and the step that isolates a mount from everything above.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never defeat a door switch to watch a fan turn - it is an interlock and the blade is unguarded. Empty a tall cabinet before tilting it to adjust a foot.

When to call a technician
