What is actually going on
On the BSFD line a warm cabinet with a running compressor is an airflow fault until proven otherwise, and this platform ices at the return duct before it ices at the coil face. That changes the first check: on the models listed in the table on this page the tell is the air outlet in the fresh-food section rather than the frost pattern the brand-generic page describes.
The symptoms, and their near misses
- A thick sheet of frost covers the freezer rear panel — Not the usual dusting but a solid white sheet, often with the fan opening partly closed by it.
- The cabinet feels warm to the touch at the sides — Side panels run warm by design on many cabinets. Compare with how it used to feel rather than with a number. On the models listed in the table on this page the access for this is the same across the line.
- The freezer is over-cold while the fridge is warm — Extreme temperatures in opposite directions is the classic damper signature.
- Ice cream has gone soft while ice cubes still look normal — Cubes survive a partial warming; ice cream does not. It is a sensitive early indicator of a freezer drifting up.
- The fresh-food side is warm but the freezer is still hard — The classic airflow split: cold is being made and is not being delivered. Look at the duct and the damper before anything else.
- NEAR MISS — only the ice maker has stopped — A cold cabinet with no ice is a fill or mould fault, not a cooling fault. The ice page covers it.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet warmed up after a power cut — Recovery from an outage takes hours, not minutes. Re-measure tomorrow before assuming a fault.
What is most likely, and why
- A frosted evaporator blocking the air path — The one to check first. First on this brand. Adaptive defrost stalls quietly rather than failing outright, so ice builds over weeks and the owner sees the warmth long before the frost. The BSFD line behaves the same way here from one model to the next.
- A defrost heater, thermostat or control that has failed — Second on this list. A dead defrost circuit produces the frost sheet that produces the warm cabinet. Clearing the frost by hand cures the symptom for a few weeks only.
- A stuck or mis-set damper between the compartments — Third most likely. The damper meters cold air into the fresh-food side. Stuck shut, the fridge warms while the freezer stays perfect — and nothing is actually broken in the cooling system. It is one of the few places the models listed in the table on this page genuinely diverge.
- A dirty or blocked condenser coil — Fourth in the ranking. A coil under a dust blanket cannot reject heat, so the system runs continuously and still loses ground on a warm day. It is the easiest cause to cure and the easiest to overlook.
- A condenser fan that has stopped turning — Fifth. A seized rear fan produces exactly the same picture as a dirty coil, and the two are checked together.
The order to check in
- Run a full manual defrost and re-measure — Empty, doors open, until the coil is clear. Cold that returns afterwards proves the defrost system is the real fault.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — With the door switch held in, listen for airflow. Its presence or absence separates the two likeliest causes. On the BSFD line this is the part that is reachable first.
- Compare the two compartments before anything else — Read both compartments together. The split between them is worth more than either reading alone.
- Check the vents inside the cabinet are not blocked — Move everything away from the rear wall and the air outlets, then give the cabinet a day.
What to do before any panel comes off
Safety
Isolate the machine first. Unplug it or switch off its breaker before any cover comes off, and give a few minutes before touching anything behind the machine compartment cover. Never put a blade to ice inside the cabinet — the evaporator tubing is directly behind the liner, and a pierced tube turns a cheap job into a sealed-system repair.
