The short answer
A dryer that does nothing when the button is pressed is usually not broken. On the HPD line the door switch, the power supply and a control lock account for most of it, and all three are checked in a few minutes. A machine that hums without turning is a different fault, and worth separating before anything is opened. The name covers a small group of numbers that share their construction, which is what fixes the order of the checks below.
What you observe on these models
- It starts if you hold the door firmly closed — A worn door switch making intermittently, which is a cheap part and an unambiguous diagnosis.
- A lock or child-lock indicator is showing — The machine is doing what it was told. This is the most common no-start that is not a fault at all.
- It ran, stopped, and now will not restart until it cools — A thermal protector open. The no-start is a symptom of overheating rather than a start fault.
- The drum turns freely by hand but the machine will not run — Rules out a seizure and moves the investigation to the switch, the control or the motor circuit.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but never heats — That is a heating fault rather than a start fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the HPD line
- Door switch not making — First, and the cheapest to rule out. It is operated every single load and it is the one switch the control trusts absolutely before energising a motor.
- Supply, breaker, cord or outlet — Next most likely on these models. Cords get crushed behind machines that have been pushed back hard, and outlets behind dryers run hot for years.
- Thermal fuse open — Third — worth checking once the two above are clean. It ranks here because it points at an airflow problem that has to be fixed as well.
Check in this order, and why
- Close the door deliberately and listen for the switch — It should click. Try starting while pressing the door firmly shut — if it runs then, the switch is the fault and nothing else needs testing.
- Prove power at the outlet and check both sides of the breaker — On a large-appliance circuit half the supply can be lost while the machine still shows signs of life. Check the cord where it passes behind the machine, too.
- Ask whether it stopped mid-load before refusing to start — That sequence points at a thermal fuse in the motor circuit, and it means the airflow has to be dealt with as well as the fuse.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before any panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never run the machine with the drum panel removed to observe a fault, and clear lint from the cabinet while you are inside it: lint against a heater is how dryer fires start.

When to call a technician
On the HPD line the line is the cabinet. Everything outside it is yours; everything inside needs a meter. If the machine hums without turning, stop pressing start — each attempt on a seized drum or a wrapped belt stresses the motor further, and it turns a belt replacement into a motor replacement.
