The short answer
When the BSW line will not drain, listen during the drain phase before assuming anything. A hum with no flow means the pump is powered and stalled, which is a blockage. Silence where a hum should be means the pump is not running at all. That single observation splits the causes in half. The name covers a small group of numbers that share their construction, which is what fixes the order of the checks below.
What you observe on these models
- Drainage works after cleaning the filter, then fails again — The filter is catching what a partly blocked hose or sump is failing to pass, so cleaning treats the symptom each time.
- Water backs up at the sink or standpipe when the machine drains — The house waste is restricted rather than the appliance, and nothing done to the machine will help.
- A grinding during drain only — Debris in the pump impeller, which is both the noise and the drainage fault in one.
- Clothes come out soaking rather than spun — The machine drained slowly enough to reach spin but not enough to spin properly, which is a partial restriction.
- NEAR MISS — the drum is empty but clothes are still very wet — That is a spin fault rather than a drainage fault, and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the BSW line
- Object jamming the pump impeller — First, and the cheapest to rule out. The signature is a hum for the whole drain window with no water movement, which nothing else produces.
- Blocked pump filter — Next most likely on these models. A filter that has never been opened since installation is the single most common cause of a washer that will not drain.
- Kinked or blocked drain hose — Third — worth checking once the two above are clean. The hose is crushed when the machine is pushed back, and a hose that has lost its required height lets water siphon rather than drain.
Check in this order, and why
- Turn the impeller by hand through the filter housing — With the power off, it should spin freely. A hard stop is an object, and it is usually visible once the light is right.
- Open the pump filter with a tray and towel ready — It is behind a flap at the base on most machines. Expect water. Clear everything in the chamber and look into the housing beyond it before closing up.
- Pull the machine out and follow the drain hose — Look for a crushed section behind it, check it still meets the height the installation needs, and squeeze along its length for the hard spot lint and scale leave.

Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before a panel comes off — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut both supply taps before touching a hose, and never defeat the lid or door interlock to reach into a moving drum.

When to call a technician
The filter, the impeller by hand, the hose route and the standpipe are all owner checks and they cover most drainage faults. Call when the filter is clear, the impeller turns freely and the machine still will not pump, because that is an electrical test on the pump and its circuit. Call a plumber rather than an appliance technician if water rises at a sink when the machine drains.
