What this looks like on a USBSR unit
- A click every few minutes followed by silence — A start relay trying and failing. This is the one noise worth acting on quickly. On these USBSR models it is the observation that decides the order.
- A scrape or chirp that changes when the door is opened — The evaporator fan on a frost-free model, cut by the door switch.
- Cracks and pops at intervals — The liner and the shelves expanding and contracting. Normal, and it often follows a defrost.
- A buzz that stops when something on top is moved — The cabinet resonating against a stored item, which is free to fix.
- NEAR MISS: water on the floor as well — Start with the leak page if there is a puddle.
The ranking on the USBSR line
- Items stored on top of or against the cabinet — Ranked first because it is free, instant and genuinely common: a tray or a box resonating against the casing buzzes exactly like a failing component. On a USBSR unit this is still the first thing to eliminate.
- A drip tray or loose panel at the back — Second, and visible as soon as the appliance is pulled out.
- A start relay cycling on a compressor that will not start — The clicking fault, and the one that predicts a failure rather than describing a nuisance.
- A failing compressor mount or an internal compressor fault — Last, and the only one that is not an owner check. It is what remains when everything above is clean.
What to check first, second, third
- Move everything stored on and around the cabinet — Free, instant, and it resolves a real share of noise complaints. The USBSR layout is the reason it comes first here.
- Open the door and listen for a change, on a frost-free upright — Louder or suddenly absent both point at the evaporator fan.
- Pull the appliance out and look at the tray, the fan and the panels — Most rattles are visible from this position and most are free to fix.
- Time the noise: constant, every few minutes, or on a schedule — Constant is a fan or compressor; every few minutes is a relay.

Isolate the appliance before working at the back. The condenser area runs hot and the fan is unguarded on many designs. Do not chip ice off a blade with a metal tool.

When to stop and call
Stop and call for a metallic knock from the compressor area that survives every other check. That is not a noise that improves.
