Dishwasher cycles are long by design, and much of that length is the machine waiting for water and temperature. A cycle that never ends is usually a cycle that never reached one of those conditions. What this looks like from the front
- The cycle runs for hours beyond its stated time — Almost always a heating or fill delay: the machine waits rather than failing.
- It stops with water in the base — A drain condition unmet, and the machine will not advance until it is.
- The programme ends early with dishes untouched — A control abort, often on a fill fault it did not display.
- The machine pauses and resumes repeatedly — A sensing input flickering — a float, a flow meter or a thermostat.
- NEAR MISS — it never starts at all — That is a latch and supply question, which is a different diagnosis.
Causes, most likely first
- Slow or partial fill — First. A half-open tap, a clogged inlet filter or a partly failed valve extends the fill step, and the control keeps waiting because it has not reached the level it needs.
- Drain not completing — Second. A blocked filter or a waste restriction stops the machine advancing between phases, so the cycle stalls with water in the tub.
- Heating too slowly or not at all — Third, and it is the classic cause of the cycle that runs for hours: the machine holds the wash until the water reaches temperature, and it will wait a long time.
- Leak sensor or float interrupting — Fourth: a float lifted by water in the base tray aborts the cycle, which the owner sees as random stopping.
What to check first, second, third
- Open the door mid-stall and look — Water level and temperature in the tub at the moment it stalls separate fill, heat and drain in one glance.
- Check the tap and the inlet filter — A partly closed isolating valve is the single most common fill restriction and it is under the sink.
- Clean the filter and run the shortest programme — A short cycle exercises fill and drain without the long heat phase in the way.

- Open the isolating valve fully — It is under the sink on the machine feed. A quarter-turn valve left half open is a genuine and frequent cause.

Call when fill and drain are both confirmed good and the machine still stalls, because that leaves the heater, the flow meter and the control — none of which can be assessed from the front. Mention how far the cycle gets and what the tub looks like at the stall: hot and empty, cold and full, or somewhere between. That sentence often decides which part comes on the van.
