The short answer
When a compact refrigerator stops producing ice, examine one thing first: the thermostat is set too warm for the icebox to work. It is both the likeliest cause and the cheapest to rule out. Next on the list: the bail arm or level sensor is in the off position. Nothing here needs a panel off until the last item.
What you observe
- The bin or the trays are empty and stay empty — Whether it stopped abruptly or tailed off already splits the list.
- The fridge section is fine and the trays never set hard — One control is serving two very different jobs.
- Ice stopped after the freezer was last filled up — Loading the freezer is what moves the arm.
- Trays no longer sit level in the compartment — Ice underneath is lifting them off the plate.
- NEAR MISS — ice forms but tastes or smells wrong — A filter or storage question, not a production one. Different page.
Causes, most likely first on this unit
- The thermostat is set too warm for the icebox to work — First on this cabinet: the icebox has no control of its own and rides on whatever the cabinet dial is set to. Set for fresh food alone, the compartment will chill a tray without ever freezing it solid.
- The bail arm or level sensor is in the off position — Ranked here because it costs nothing to look at and it explains a perfectly abrupt stop.
- Frost has swallowed the icebox — Ranked here because it is the normal consequence of a manual cabinet going too long between defrosts.
- The freezer is not cold enough to trigger a harvest — Last of the temperature causes, but it must be cleared before a single water component is blamed.
Check in this order, and why
- Turn the dial colder and give it a full day — The icebox has no separate control; it follows the cabinet dial.
- Look at the bail arm and clear anything leaning on it — Arm up means off. A stacked freezer holds it up all the time.
- Look at how much of the icebox is ice — Frost is insulation: the thicker it is, the slower the trays freeze.
- Check that the freezer is genuinely hard-frozen — A freezer holds food safely at 0 °F (−18 °C) or below.
What an owner can safely check
- Establish whether it stopped suddenly or faded over weeks — Abrupt means a blockage or a switch; gradual means a restriction.
About 5 min
- Set the dial one step colder and retest a tray after a day — Watch the fresh-food side does not start freezing.
About 30 min
- Drop the bail arm and clear space around it — Give it a day before deciding anything else is wrong.
About 5 min
- Empty and fully defrost the icebox with the door open — Never chip at it. A punctured plate scraps the cabinet.
Tools: towels, bowlAbout 60 min
- STOP HERE before opening the ice maker or any water fitting — Pressurised water and live terminals are where an owner check ends.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip ice off the cold plate. The refrigerant tubing runs inside that plate and a puncture scraps the cabinet outright — let it melt instead.
When to call a technician
Call once the temperature is confirmed good, the supply is proven open and nothing is frozen in the fill path — what is left is an electrical part in a wet place, which is a meter job. Call sooner if the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature — then ice is the symptom, not the fault. Call immediately if you find water standing on or near an electrical connection.

What this page does not cover
This page is written for the brand and the cabinet class, not for one family or model line. Where a family- or model-specific page exists for your unit, that page is the more specific answer. Deliberately absent: thermostat and relay identifiers, wiring colours and capacity figures, which differ between the cube, tall compact and glass-door families.
