The BSC answer in short
On an AVG BSC refrigerator a warm cabinet with the motor running points at the defrost and airflow side of the machine, not at the refrigerant. These are tightly packed cabinets with small coils, so a thin layer of dust or a light frost sheet costs more cooling here than it would on a full-size unit. The first two checks need no tools at all.
What the owner sees
- Food safety is already marginal — Looking at BSC models specifically, milk sours early and lettuce wilts within a day — the cabinet is above the safe holding temperature.
- The compressor runs and never stops — Across the BSC line, a unit that cannot reach temperature never satisfies its thermostat, so it simply keeps going.
- The cabinet is warm but the unit is plainly running — For the BSC line, the motor note is normal and continuous; nothing inside is at the temperature it should be.
- Warm air blows from the vents instead of cold — Within the BSC family, air movement without chill means the cold side of the loop is iced or starved.
- NEAR MISS — water is pooling under the cabinet — A leak with normal temperatures is a drain or fill fault, not a cooling fault. Read the water-leak page for your model line.
What goes wrong here, most frequent first
- A stalled defrost cycle icing the evaporator — It leads on these cabinets because the evaporator sits directly behind the rear panel with very little clearance, so even a thin sheet closes the air path completely.
- A condenser coil blanketed in dust — It ranks where it does because a compact cabinet has a small coil with no margin: a felt layer of dust is enough to cost the whole temperature difference. It keeps that place on the BSC line.
- A stopped or dying evaporator fan motor — It sits here because a bearing that has begun to drag runs slow rather than stopping, which halves the airflow and looks exactly like a mild refrigerant fault.
- A sealed-system or compressor fault — It comes last because everything above it is cheaper, more likely and checkable without a gauge set — and because this one needs a licensed technician. It is ranked the same way on every BSC model.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the circulating fan — On a BSC model, hold the door switch in if you must — the fan should be audible within a second or two, and silence narrows the list immediately.
- Empty the cabinet and leave it off with the door shut — Give it long enough for the sheet to melt completely, dry the panel, then run it again and watch how fast the cold comes back.
- Listen for whether the compressor ever stops — For the BSC line, stand by it for half an hour with the door shut and note what happens.
Safety before access
Safety
Isolate the machine at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off; a capacitor can stay charged after the power is off. Leave the door switch and its wiring exactly as you found them — it cuts the fan for a reason. Refrigerant work is licensed work, so if you find oil at the compressor, stop and hand it over.

When to hand it over
The owner half of this fault is everything you can reach without a tool: clearance, loading, seals, vents and the condenser. Past that the diagnosis needs gauges on a sealed system, which is licensed work. Call sooner if the unit is tripping its breaker or the compressor is hot enough to smell.
