- The door glass stays cold on a hot programme — The simplest test there is, and it is reliable — a hot wash warms the glass noticeably by mid-cycle.
- Cycles have become much longer than they used to be — A machine waiting to reach temperature extends the heat step, which reads as a long cycle rather than as a cold one.
- Whites and greasy items have gradually got worse — Body oils need temperature. Slow deterioration on those items is the usual first clue.
- The breaker trips partway into a hot wash — That is an element failing to earth rather than an element failing open, and it is the urgent version of this fault.
- NEAR MISS — the machine never fills, so there is nothing to heat — Fill first, heat second. If the drum is dry, this is not the page you want.
The ranking that matters
- Scale on the heating element — First in any hard-water area: scale insulates the element from the water, so the element runs hotter and the water runs cooler. It also shortens element life, which is why scale and element failure arrive in that order.
- Element failed open — Second. An open element simply does nothing; the machine keeps going, extends the heat step, and finishes cold. There is no noise, no smell and no code on many machines.
- Thermistor reading wrongly — Third. A sensor that reports water as already hot stops the element being energised at all. The signature is a machine that behaves perfectly and never heats.
- Programme selection — Last, but it belongs on the list: eco and cold-wash settings, and a cold-only supply connection, produce exactly this complaint on a machine with nothing wrong with it.
What to check first, second, third
- Touch the door glass twenty minutes into a hot cycle — Free, immediate and decisive. Cold glass on a hot programme confirms the complaint before you spend anything.
- Check the programme and the eco settings — Rule out the free cause before the paid ones. Some machines default to a reduced-temperature eco variant of every programme.
- Look at the element through the drum if the design allows it — On some machines the element is visible from inside the drum with a light. Heavy white crust is a scale verdict without any dismantling.

- Run a hot programme and check the glass at the halfway point — Note whether it warms at all. Partial warmth means slow heating, no warmth means no heating, and those are different faults.

Unplug the machine or switch off its breaker before removing a panel, and close the water supply before touching a hose or a fitting. Components inside can hold a charge after shutdown. Never run the machine with a panel off or with the lock defeated — the interlock is a safety device, not an inconvenience.
Where owner work ends
Book a visit when the glass stays cold after a descale and the programme is confirmed to be a genuine hot one — at that point it is the element, the thermistor or the relay driving them, and separating those three needs a meter. Call urgently instead of waiting if the machine trips the breaker during the wash: that is the same element failing in the dangerous direction, and the machine should stay off until it is seen.
