What is most likely happening
A door seal problem on a washer shows up as a leak at the front, a musty smell or a door that no longer closes squarely, and on a front-loading machine the gasket is a consumable rather than a permanent part. What this looks like from the front
- Water on the floor directly under the door — A front-of-machine leak that only appears during the wash is a gasket verdict until proven otherwise.
- Black or grey staining in the fold of the seal — Biofilm growing in standing water. It is a hygiene problem first and a material problem second, because it degrades the rubber.
- A tear, split or hardened patch on the gasket face — Usually at the bottom of the seal where debris collects, or where an underwire or a zip has cut it.
- The door needs a shove to latch, or springs back — A swollen or displaced seal fights the door. It also stresses the lock, which is why door-seal and no-start faults often arrive together.
- NEAR MISS — water appears behind the machine, not under the door — That is a hose or a pump leak. The location is the diagnosis, so look before you decide.
What it usually turns out to be
- Debris trapped in the seal fold — First, because it is by far the most common and because it causes the other three. Coins, hair and grit sit in the fold, hold water, abrade the rubber and eventually hold the door open a fraction.
- Biofilm and detergent residue degrading the rubber — Second. Low-temperature washing plus generous dosing leaves a film that holds moisture against the seal permanently; the rubber hardens and the smell arrives before the leak does.
- Physical damage from sharp items — Third: underwires, zips and buttons cut the seal at the lower front. The cut is visible once you pull the fold open, which makes this the easiest cause to confirm.
- Age and compression set — Last. Rubber eventually takes a permanent set and stops sealing at the top of the door, which produces an intermittent leak that appears only on high-water cycles.

- Pull the seal fold open all the way round and look — Most of this diagnosis is visible in two minutes. Note debris, staining, tears and hard patches by clock position.
- Run a fill and watch the door face — Where the water appears tells you whether the seal is leaking at the lip, at the clamp, or not at all.
- Close the door slowly and watch the seal compress — A seal that bulges or folds instead of compressing squarely is displaced, and a displaced seal leaks on every cycle.

- Clean the fold thoroughly — Pull the lip back, wipe the whole circumference with a cloth and mild cleaner, and lift out anything trapped. Do this monthly.

Safety
Turn the circuit off and confirm it, then close the supply valve. Anything you drain will come out faster than expected, so have a shallow tray ready. If water has reached the control board or the motor, stop there and call: a dried-out board can work for a week and fail closed afterwards.
When to call a technician
Cleaning, drying and inspecting are yours and they solve the majority of seal complaints. Replacement is not: it means the front panel and the clamp rings come off, and getting the bellows drain hole back at the bottom is the difference between a repair and a recurring leak. Get it done rather than working around it — a leak in front of a washer is a slip hazard as much as a water one.
