The symptoms, and the near misses
- The timer sticks at one figure and the remaining time grows — A washer estimates rather than counts. Time increasing means the machine has extended a step because a condition is unmet.

- The spin never reaches full speed, or is skipped entirely — Almost always balance detection, which repeatedly redistributes and gives up rather than spinning an off-centre drum.
- The programme ends much earlier than it should — A control aborting on a fault it has not displayed, or a cycle selected that is genuinely shorter than expected.
- NEAR MISS — the machine never starts at all — That is a no-start, and it is a different diagnosis with a different first check.
Causes in order of likelihood
- Balance detection refusing to spin — First, because it is the most frequent by a wide margin and because it looks like a fault when it is a protection. A single heavy item — a towel, a mat, a duvet — is enough on a small drum.
- Slow or partial drain — Second. The machine will not move on until the tub reads empty, so a partly blocked filter or a kinked hose reads to the owner as a stuck cycle rather than as a drainage fault.
- Slow fill from a restricted supply — Third. A half-open tap or a clogged inlet screen extends the fill step, and the control keeps adding time while it waits for the level it wants.
- Heating not reaching the set temperature — Fourth, and it is where scale and element faults show up. A machine that cannot reach temperature waits at the heat step, which is why long stalls cluster there.
What to check first, second, third
- Note the exact step the machine sticks at — Fill, heat, wash, drain or spin. Each one maps to a different component, and the step is more informative than any displayed code.
- Open the door at the stall and look inside — Water level and water temperature at the stall point separate fill, heat and drain in one look.
- Redistribute the load and restart the spin alone — If a spin-only cycle completes with the load spread out, balance detection was the answer.

- Redistribute the load by hand and restart — Spread items evenly around the drum, particularly after washing one large item. Most spin stalls end here.

Book a visit if the machine still stalls at the same step once the load, the filter, the hose and the taps have all been dealt with — a repeatable stall at a fixed step with clean plumbing means a sensor or a heater, and both need instruments. Mention the step it halts at when you book; a technician who knows it stalls at heat rather than at drain arrives with the right part on the van.
