The short answer
Water at a chest freezer usually comes down to one thing: the drain plug is out, loose or blocked. Next on the list: defrost melt water overrunning what is there to catch it. Before anything else, establish whether the water is inside the cabinet or on the outside of it — those are two entirely different faults.
What you observe
- Water where there was none before — Inside the cabinet, at one low corner, or beaded on the outside — each means something different.
- Water appears at one low corner rather than generally — A single point means a hole, not condensation.
- A large puddle on the day the cabinet was defrosted — Timing alone identifies this one.
- The outside of the cabinet is beaded with moisture — That is room air meeting a cold surface.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is also failing to hold temperature — Read the cooling page first: a warm freezer that leaks is one fault with two symptoms.
Causes, most likely first on this machine
- The drain plug is out, loose or blocked — First on a chest freezer, because it has a drain at its lowest corner specifically for defrosting, and that plug is the one part an owner removes and refits. Left half-seated it weeps continuously; left blocked it holds the defrost water in the base until it finds the lid seal.
- Defrost melt water overrunning what is there to catch it — Ranked here because it happens on every defrost unless the water is managed part-way through.
- The lid and cabinet are sweating in humid air — Ranked here because it is weather rather than a fault, and no repair will change it.
- The cabinet is tilted away from its drain — Last, and settled with a spirit level in minutes.
Check in this order, and why
- Find the drain plug at the base and check it is seated — It is the only deliberate opening in the cabinet.
- Note whether the water appeared during or after a defrost — The tray on this class cannot hold a whole defrost at once.
- Note whether the water is on the outside or the inside — Outside is condensation; inside is a leak or a defrost.
- Put a level across the cabinet in both directions — The drain relies on a small fall and a tilt defeats it.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. A chest freezer is far heavier loaded than it looks and its lid can fall. Empty it before moving it, prop the lid while you work inside, and never chip ice off the walls or the base.
When to call a technician
Call once the drain and the seal are proven good, the cabinet is level and water still returns inside it. Call sooner if the water is reaching a socket or running under another appliance. Call immediately if water is touching any electrical connection — switch the circuit off before you mop.
