The programme on a dryer is short and simple, so when it misbehaves the causes are few: the sensor that decides when the load is dry, the thermostats that police the heat, and the door switch that can end a cycle silently. The symptoms, and the near misses
- The cycle ends far too early with the load still wet — A dryness reading arrived before the load was actually dry.
- The machine runs indefinitely without finishing — The opposite error: the reading never reaches dry, often because there is no airflow to change it.
- It stops mid-cycle and restarts when the door is opened and closed — A door switch making and breaking intermittently, which halts the machine silently every time it does.
- The cool-down phase is skipped — That points at the timer or the control rather than at the sensors.
- NEAR MISS — the machine never begins at all — That is a no-start, and it starts with the door switch and the supply rather than with the programme.
Causes, most likely first
- Moisture sensing misread — First. Softener film, an unusually small load or a single synthetic item all fool the sensor, and a fooled sensor ends the cycle in whichever direction the error runs.
- Airflow restriction driving thermal cut-outs — Second, and it explains the mid-cycle stops that come back after a cool-down: a thermostat opens on temperature, the machine stops, the machine cools, and it runs again for a while.
- Door switch intermittence — Third. A worn actuator makes and breaks with drum vibration, which pauses the machine at apparently random points.
- Timer or control fault — Last. A mechanical timer that sticks at one position, or a control that does not advance, gives a repeatable stall at exactly the same place every time — which is what distinguishes it from the causes above.
What to check first, second, third
- Run a timed cycle with a normal load — If the timed programme completes properly, the moisture sensing is the fault and nothing else needs investigating.
- Check whether stops follow a hot period — A stop after the machine has been running hot, which clears once it cools, is a thermal answer.
- Press the door firmly against the frame mid-cycle — If the machine stumbles or recovers as you do, the switch is intermittent.

- Clean the sensor bars inside the drum — A minute with a cloth and a little vinegar removes the film that causes most early stops.

Safety
Cut the power before you start and leave it off until the cabinet is closed again. If the machine is gas-fired, close the manual shut-off at the appliance as well. Should you ever smell gas, switch nothing on or off, leave the building and call the gas utility or emergency services from outside.
When to call a technician
Book a visit when a timed cycle fails in the same way as an automatic one and the duct is clear, because that rules out both the sensing and the airflow and leaves the switches, the thermostats and the timer. Tell the technician whether the stops follow a hot period — thermal stops and electrical stops look identical from the front but they are found in different parts of the machine.
