The short answer
A Avanti XQB that will not start splits on one question: is anything at all happening? A machine with lights that refuses to run is being stopped by a condition; a machine with no lights has no power. On a compact top-loader the cabinet is lighter than the load it spins, so anything that upsets the balance moves the whole machine. Answer that first and half the list disappears.
What you observe on these models
- Completely dead — no lights, no sounds — A power report.
- Lights on, cycle selected, nothing happens — The control is alive and refusing.
- No lock sound after pressing start — The lock should be audible within a second or two.
- It worked an hour ago and now will not — A thermal cut-out that has not reset, or a supply that has dropped out.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and then stops mid-cycle — That is a stalled-cycle fault, not a start fault, and it belongs on the cycle page.
Causes, most likely first on XQB
- The lid or door latch — A machine that will not confirm its door is shut will not begin. On a front-loader you should hear the lock engage a moment after start. Ranked first on Avanti XQB because these models carry very little electronics, so suspicion falls on plumbing, switches and the load long before it falls on a board.
- Power at the machine — Outlet, breaker and plug come first because they are free to check and because a machine with no display and no lock sound has no power, whatever the owner has assumed.
- No water available — Several machines will not begin their cycle without a fill, so a closed tap presents as a machine that will not start rather than one that will not fill.
- A motor thermal cut-out — A motor that has overheated will refuse to restart until it has cooled, which produces a machine that worked an hour ago and will not now.
- The control board or the timer — Last, because it is both the least likely and the most expensive, and because every item above it mimics it exactly. Last on this list, and the item that every cause above it can imitate exactly.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Prove the outlet with something else — A lamp or a phone charger in the same outlet takes ten seconds and settles the most common cause outright.
- Close the lid or door firmly and listen — The lock or switch should be audible. If it is not, everything downstream of it is explained.
- Check for a delay start or a control lock — Both are set by accident and both produce a machine that appears dead while being entirely healthy.
- Leave it thirty minutes and try again — A motor thermal cut-out resets on cooling. A machine that starts after a rest has told you something specific about what was wrong.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the washer or switch off its breaker before removing any panel, and close the tap before touching a fill hose. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do not test an outlet by touch and do not bypass a lid or door switch to make the machine run: the switch exists to stop the drum turning while it is open, and defeating it removes the only protection in the machine.

When to call a technician
Call when the outlet is proven good, the lid or door lock is silent or clearly damaged, and no setting explains it.
