The short answer
A leaking Avanti VF is usually reporting a blocked drain, a condensing surface or a displaced pan. This is a solid-door cabinet holding a deep sub-zero load, with an evaporator either wrapped into the shelves or hidden behind a rear panel depending on whether the model defrosts itself, which determines where each of those three can put water, and the ranking below follows from that rather than from generic advice.
What you observe on these models
- Water inside the cabinet, at the bottom — Condensate that could not leave.
- Water on the floor at the front — Either the cabinet is leaning forward or the water came over an interior lip.
- Water on the floor at the back — That is the machine bay and the pan in it.
- Beads or runs on the outside of the door — Room humidity condensing on a cold surface.
- NEAR MISS — oily fluid at the machine bay — That is not water.
Causes, most likely first on VF
- A blocked defrost drain — This is the leak that looks worst and costs least. Melt water backs up over the drain lip and runs forward, so the water appears inside the cabinet or on the floor at the front. On a manual-defrost cabinet the drain only matters during a defrost, which is exactly when the leak is reported. Ranked first here rather than further down, because an upright freezer gives this cause more opportunities than any other on the list.
- Ice melting after a warm spell or a power cut — A one-off pool after the machine has been off, or after a door was left open, is meltwater and not a fault. It matters because it is the one leak that needs no repair.
- The evaporation pan in the machine bay — The pan under the cabinet is meant to evaporate what the drain delivers. If it is cracked, displaced or being fed faster than it can evaporate, the water lands on the floor at the back.
- Condensation at the door — A door that no longer seals condenses room moisture on the cold face and drips. The tell is water that is worst along one edge and after a humid day. Last on this list, and the item that every cause above it can imitate exactly.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Map the water before touching anything — Dry everything, put paper towel at the front, the back and inside the base, and come back in a day. Knowing where it arrives eliminates most of the list.
- Put a level on the cabinet, front to back — A cabinet leaning the wrong way defeats a drain that is otherwise perfectly clear. This is the cheapest cause and the most frequently skipped check.
- Find the drain outlet and confirm it flows — The interior rear panel and the base grille are the two ways in, and the cabinet has to be emptied and warmed before either is worth removing. Pour a small amount of warm water down it and watch for it to arrive in the pan.
- Inspect the pan in the machine bay — Cracked, displaced after a move, or simply full. On a cabinet of this size the pan can usually be lifted out and looked at.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel or reaching into the machine bay — water and mains wiring share that space. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Never chip or lever ice off an evaporator or a shelf: the tubing under it is thin-walled and a punctured circuit turns a cheap repair into a scrapped cabinet.

When to call a technician
Call when the drain is clear, the cabinet is level, the pan is sound and the water still arrives — at that point the leak is inside the insulated shell and needs the cabinet opened. Call immediately if the fluid is oily rather than watery, if water is reaching an outlet or the machine bay wiring, or if the cabinet has tripped protection since the leak began.
