Start here, for URBC models
An Avanti URBC refrigerator that has started buzzing, rattling or humming loudly is usually telling you about its mounting rather than its motor. These are light cabinets on small feet, and they transmit every vibration into the floor and the cabinetry around them. Identify WHERE the noise is before you decide WHAT it is.
What this looks like in use
- The noise stops when you open the door — On the URBC line, the door switch cuts the evaporator fan, so anything that stops with the door open is that fan.
- A sharp clatter for a second on start-up, then silence — For the URBC line, a fan blade clipping ice or a shroud makes exactly this short burst as it comes up to speed.
- Vibration you can feel in the floor or the worktop — On URBC models in particular, transmitted vibration usually means levelling or clearance, not a failing motor.
- A rattle that changes when you touch the cabinet — Looking at URBC models specifically, if a hand on the side changes the sound, the source is contact rather than a bearing.
- A high whine that rises and falls with nothing else changing — Across the URBC line, if it tracks the cooling demand it is probably normal; if it is constant and new, it is wear.
- NEAR MISS — loud running AND a warm cabinet — Then noise is the symptom and temperature is the fault. Read the cooling-failure page for your model line first.
Ranked causes on the URBC line
- A cabinet that is not level or is resting on cabinetry — It leads the list because a single foot off the floor turns the compressor into a drum skin — and because the fix is a spanner and five minutes.
- Tubing or a drip tray vibrating against the shell — It is on the list because it produces the most alarming noise of any cause here while being the cheapest to fix. On the URBC models below the ranking is the same.
- Something touching the cabinet or a loose panel — It belongs here because a hand on the cabinet identifies it in seconds and a hand also fixes it.
- A failing compressor — It comes last because every cheaper cause imitates it, and only a technician with instruments should call it. It sits there for URBC models too.
Check in this order, and why
- Open the door and listen for the noise to stop — On the URBC models listed below, do this first every time: it halves the candidate list at zero cost.
- Look for a frost sheet on the rear wall inside the freezer — If there is a slab there, treat the defrost problem — the noise is a symptom of it.
- Take everything off the top and away from the back wall — Stacked trays and bottles against the rear are the commonest noise source in a working unit.
- Note when the noise happens and how long it lasts — On a URBC model, write the times down for a day: a pattern turns a mystery into a normal function.

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before a panel comes off or a hand goes near a fan — a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and a fan blade that starts while your fingers are in the shroud is the injury this fault actually causes. Do not open the sealed system to chase a noise: that is licensed work.

When to hand it over
Owner territory here is contact, loading, levelling and the ice-maker supply. Past that a noise needs a panel off, and behind the panel are mains terminals and a fan that can start without warning. Call sooner if the sound is a hard knock from the compressor rather than a rattle.
