The short answer
When a cabinet from the RMX family stops holding temperature while the compressor still cycles, the cold is either not being made where it should be or not being carried to where it is needed. Warm inside and audibly working is a different fault from silent and warm, and the two are worth separating before anything else: only the first belongs on this page.
What you observe on these models
- Condensation or a damp smell inside — Air that is being let in from the room brings its moisture with it, so damp inside usually travels with a sealing problem rather than a cooling one.
- It cools better when it is nearly empty — A unit that copes until it is loaded is running out of capacity rather than failing outright, and that points at airflow and at the seal before it points at the compressor.
- A sheet of frost on the back wall rather than a light dusting — Frost that has gone from powder to a solid skin has stopped being cosmetic: it is now standing between the cold surface and the air that is meant to move over it.
- NEAR MISS - it cools everywhere except the ice compartment — That is an ice production complaint rather than a cooling one, and the page for that fault takes it from the other end.
Causes, most likely first on this platform
- Ice on the cold surface, not enough air over it — Cold has to be made at one surface and then carried everywhere else. Let frost bridge that surface and the air stops passing through it, so the cabinet warms while the machine works harder than it ever has. Every entry here sits on one base, so the cold system is common to all of them and the fault that leads is the one that system produces on its own.
- A choked condenser or no clearance around it — Second on this platform. A blanketed coil costs capacity rather than removing it, which is why it shows up as a cabinet that manages in winter and gives up in the first warm week.
- The door seal and how the door sits — Third here. A tired gasket or a door that no longer pulls itself shut will hold a cabinet a few degrees warm indefinitely, so it stays in the running even when something more dramatic is suspected.
- A stalled fan or a control that has drifted — Fourth. A dead fan or a control that has drifted stays on the list, but it is worth reaching only once the free checks are clean, since confirming either needs a panel off.
- The one fault on this list that is not owner work — Last. Last, and last for a reason: refrigerant work is licensed work, the tools are not owner tools, and the four causes above account for most cabinets that arrive with this complaint.
Check in this order, and why
- Put a thermometer in and leave it — A dial reading is a request, not a measurement. Give it several hours with the door left alone and you will know whether you have a fault at all and how far off it is. All 3 entries in the table below sit on one base, so what this check tells you holds for every one of them.
- Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull — Do it at several points around the frame. Anywhere the paper slides out without resistance is a gap, and a gap anywhere is a permanent load on the cold system.
- Listen for the fan with the door held open — Where the model has one, the fan should be audible once the door switch is defeated by the handle rather than by you. Silence with the compressor running narrows it hard.

Safety
Isolate the machine at the plug or the breaker before any panel comes off, and expect a capacitor to hold a charge after the power has gone. Do not chip frost off a cold surface with a knife or a screwdriver: the tubing behind it is thin, and a puncture turns a cheap fault into a scrapped cabinet. Refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools.

When to call a technician
The line is the panel. Anything you can reach with the door open - the setting, the seal, the loading, the clearance - is yours; anything behind the rear panel or on the sealed system is not. Call straight away if the compressor is hot and silent, if a breaker trips when it tries to start, or if there is oil where there should not be, and do not keep cycling the power to see whether it catches this time.
