The answer first
Start by deciding whether the BCS noise is continuous, intermittent or periodic, because each maps to a different group of causes. Continuous means something is running or resonating; intermittent means something is being struck; periodic means a control is switching. That split does more work than any single check below it.
The observable symptoms
- A rattle from low down at the back of the cabinet — It usually starts a second or two after the compressor does, which is the clue that it is being driven rather than generated.
- A gurgle or a boiling sound after the machine stops — Refrigerant equalising through the tubing. It is normal and is on this list so it can be ruled out rather than chased.
- A single knock when the machine starts or stops — The compressor moving on its mounts as the load comes on or off.
- It is loud at the start of a run and settles after a minute — A start transient rather than a running fault, and it usually points at mounts.
- NEAR MISS — the noise arrived and the cabinet stopped getting cold — A fan that has stopped is both quieter and warmer; that combination belongs with the cooling article rather than this one.
The ranked causes for this family
- Cabinet touching a wall, a counter or another appliance — Anything the cabinet touches becomes part of the instrument. A unit set into a recess or pushed against a dishwasher transmits its normal running noise into a much larger surface, and the complaint is a machine that suddenly got loud without anything failing. Ranked first here: it is both the commonest cause of this complaint on compact refrigeration and the cheapest to rule out, which is the same reason it belongs before anything requiring a panel.
- Evaporator fan blade catching ice inside the freezer section — A blade clipping frost gives a hard, intermittent tick that changes with the door: hold the door switch in and the sound appears, let it out and it stops. It ranks second on BCS rather than first only because the cause above it is quicker to exclude, not because it is rarer.
- Cabinet not level, or feet not all carrying weight — A compact refrigerator on four feet only needs one of them to be short for the whole cabinet to rock on the compressor's own vibration. Third: real, but it usually announces itself with something the first two causes do not produce, so the earlier checks will have already pointed at it.
What to check first, second, third
- Listen with the room quiet — A compact cabinet is quiet enough that the diagnosis depends on hearing which part the sound follows, which is not possible with a television on in the same room.
- Pull the cabinet clear of everything it touches — Even a finger's width of air changes the sound if contact is the cause.
- Hold the door switch in and listen at the freezer section — A tick that follows the switch is the evaporator fan, and it means frost as well as noise.
- Lean on each corner in turn while it runs — If the sound changes, the cabinet is rocking and the feet are the fix. This takes seconds and settles the commonest cause.

Safety
Power off before anything else — the plug out, or the breaker open. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Two other hazards belong to this appliance specifically: the door switch, which stops a fan blade you would otherwise reach past, and the condenser fins, which are sharp enough to open a knuckle without warning.
