The short answer for ARBC models
When an Avanti ARBC refrigerator stops making ice, the useful first question is whether water is arriving at all. Ice in the bin but fused into one lump is a completely different fault from an empty bin with a dry mould, and the two lead to different halves of this list.
What you actually observe
- Water on the freezer floor under the ice maker — Overfill or a misaligned fill tube, and it will freeze into a sheet if left.
- The cubes have fused into one solid lump — Slow production, so each cube part-melts and refreezes onto the next.
- The bin is empty and the mould is dry — No water is arriving. The fault is upstream of the ice maker itself.
- The dispenser works but the bin never refills — Production has stopped while the dispensing mechanism is fine.
- NEAR MISS — water is running down the inside of the door — That is a leak, and the water-leak page for this refrigerator covers it.
Causes on ARBC, most likely first
- Bail arm or shut-off sensor in the off position — Ranked first because it costs nothing to check and because a bin being pulled in and out is exactly what knocks it up.
- Freezer not cold enough to trigger harvest — The ice maker will not cycle until the mould reaches its harvest temperature, so a warm compartment stops production entirely.
- Ejector or motor jammed — A cube that has bridged the mould will stall the ejector, and the module stops until it is cleared.
- Door not closing fully — A door held ajar by a package warms the compartment enough to stop harvesting long before the food spoils.
What to look at first, second, third
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: three of the four named above can be settled on ARBC models before a tool comes out.
- Put a thermometer in the freezer for an hour — A freezer holds food safely at zero degrees Fahrenheit or below, and an ice maker needs that cold to harvest.
- Pull the unit out and follow the supply line for a kink — Look particularly where the line passes behind the cabinet, which is where it gets pinched.
- Check the filter date and change it if you cannot remember — Filters are the commonest restriction and the cheapest part on the machine.
What to isolate before you start
Safety
Pull the plug or switch the breaker off before any panel is disturbed, and remember that a capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Shut the water supply as well if the refrigerator has an ice maker or a dispenser, because that connection is at mains pressure and it is behind the cabinet where you will be working. Leave interlocks alone and leave the sealed system to a licensed technician.
