The short answer
Water around an AR cabinet almost always started as condensate the machine made on purpose and then failed to route away, not as a burst pipe. On a compact manual-defrost refrigerator the route is short and the places it can fail are few, which makes this one of the better faults to diagnose at home.
What you observe on these models
- A sudden pool rather than a slow trickle — Manual defrost releases its ice as a sheet, and the water arrives faster than the channel can take it.
- The drip tray at the back is full, tilted or sitting off its lugs — It lives on the compressor and gets knocked every time the cabinet moves.
- The puddle appears in the same place every time — A repeatable location is the most useful clue there is: it names the path before you open anything.
- More water on humid days than on dry ones — Condensation is weather-driven; a plumbing fault is not.
- NEAR MISS — water only after the door has been left open a long time — That is the cabinet catching up with the room, not a leak.
Causes, most likely first on the AR family
- Defrost meltwater beating the channel — First on this platform: when the ice on the plate finally lets go it does so as a sheet, not as drips, and it arrives faster than the channel can take it.
- The drip tray at the back full, cracked or knocked out of place — Second: these trays sit on top of the compressor, they are shallow, and they get dislodged whenever the cabinet is moved.
- Humidity in the room the cabinet stands in — Third: the wetter the air, the more water the machine makes, so a marginal drain that coped all winter starts overflowing in summer.
- A shelf or drawer diverting water off its intended path — Fourth: water inside a cabinet follows mouldings and channels.
- Something spilled and frozen inside — Last: a spill that freezes into the channel blocks it as effectively as debris, and it melts on the same schedule as everything else.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Ask when the water appears — After a defrost, all at once, is the platform behaving as it does; steadily, every day, is a drain or a gasket.
- Pull the cabinet and look at the drip tray on the compressor — Full, cracked or hanging off a lug, and all three are visible in a second.
- Level the cabinet and check the floor under it — Compacts get moved more than any other refrigerator and they are never re-levelled.
- Defrost the cabinet fully before judging anything else — On a manual-defrost platform, a full defrost is a diagnostic step as much as a fix.
- Work out which compartment the water started in — On a shared-evaporator cabinet the water is made in the freezer and has to travel, so a wet refrigerator floor usually starts upstairs.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do it before the first panel rather than before the difficult one: the live parts are not where most people expect them.

When to call a technician
Clearing a drain, levelling a cabinet and replacing a gasket are all owner jobs on a compact manual-defrost refrigerator. On these models the line falls at the sealed system, which is licensed work from the first cut. Call without working through anything at all for a burning smell, a breaker that trips, or water reaching the machine compartment.
