The short answer

- The problem began after the cabinet was moved or restocked — A history like that points at placement, levelling or loading before anything internal.
- NEAR MISS — the cabinet is silent and nothing is cold — That is a no-power, cold-control or start-relay fault and it belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the AR family
- The cold control setting and its sensing bulb — First on this platform: a dial knocked back while loading, or a sensing bulb pushed out of contact with the evaporator plate, gives a cabinet that never runs long enough.
- A frost slab on the evaporator plate — Second: there is no automatic defrost here, so ice accumulates until the plate cannot take heat out of the air at all.
- Door gasket, door alignment and levelling — Third: these cabinets are light, they get moved, and a cabinet standing out of level closes its door against gravity rather than with it.

- Start relay, overload or the sealed system — Last: a compressor that tries, clicks and stops after a few seconds is a relay or overload story; a compressor that hums and never starts is a service call.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Check the cold control and look at where its sensing bulb sits — It is the first thing that gets knocked and the first thing to rule out; a bulb that has sprung away from the plate explains a cabinet that barely runs.
- Look at the evaporator plate and judge the thickness of the ice — Anything past a light frost is insulating the plate, and defrosting the cabinet is both the test and the fix.
- Look at the door seal and at what is holding the door open — Run a sheet of paper round the seal, then look for a bottle or rack standing proud of the door line.
- Leave a thermometer on the middle shelf overnight — A number beats a hand.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do it before the first panel rather than before the difficult one: the live parts are not where most people expect them.

When to call a technician
