The short answer
Most AR noise complaints turn out to be a healthy machine amplified by what is around it, or something loose inside the cabinet, rather than a failing compressor. On a compact manual-defrost refrigerator the sound has a short path to you and the usual sources are all reachable.
What you observe on these models
- A click, a short buzz and then silence, repeating every few minutes — The start relay trying and the compressor not starting, and it is the signature noise of a compact.
- A buzz from the back that stops when you press on the drip tray — The tray is off a lug and resonating with the compressor.
- The noise tracks the compressor cycle exactly — If it starts and stops with the compressor, it belongs to the machine compartment; if it does not, it does not.
- NEAR MISS — a loud buzz that coincides with the cabinet no longer cooling — That is a starting fault and the cooling page is the right one to read first.
Causes, most likely first on the AR family
- Start relay clicking and the compressor buzzing on attempt — First on this platform: a sharp click every few minutes with a short buzz and no cooling is this cause almost every time.
- The drip tray or a loose back panel rattling — Second: the tray sits on the compressor and is held by lugs; once it is off one lug it buzzes with every compressor cycle.
- Tubing contact inside the machine compartment — Third: small cabinets get moved often, and the tubing is soft.
- Levelling and the floor under the cabinet — Fourth: a hollow floor or a cabinet on three feet amplifies a compressor that is perfectly healthy.
- The fan behind the freezer panel, iced or failing — Last: on a two-door cabinet this fan also serves the refrigerator compartment, so its noise arrives through both doors and gets misplaced.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Listen for a click, a buzz and then silence, repeating every few minutes — That pattern is the start relay and the compressor failing to start, and it is the most common noise complaint on a compact.
- Pull the cabinet and press on the drip tray and the back panel — A tray off its lug buzzes in time with the compressor and goes silent under a finger.
- Level the cabinet and check what it is standing on — A compact on a hollow floor is louder than the same cabinet on tile.
- Separate normal flow noise from mechanical noise — A gurgle or a soft boil a minute after the compressor stops is refrigerant settling and is normal on every cabinet of this kind.
- Open each door in turn while the noise is happening — On this cabinet the fan serves both compartments, so the door that silences it tells you which switch and which fan you are dealing with.

Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Do it before the first panel rather than before the difficult one: the live parts are not where most people expect them.

When to call a technician
