The short answer for AFS models
An Avanti AFS refrigerator that hums away without cooling is not usually beyond help. A refrigerator holds food safely at 40 degrees Fahrenheit or below, so move anything perishable to a cooler now, then work down the checks below in order rather than opening the doors repeatedly to see whether it has improved.
What you actually observe
- Condensation or sweating on the inside walls — Warm humid air is getting in faster than the unit can pull it down.
- The freezer is still cold but the fresh-food side is not — Classic airflow: the cold is being made and is not reaching the upper compartment.
- The unit is cooling in cycles, cold then warm over a day — A defrost cycle that runs but does not clear all the ice before the next one starts.
- Food in the fresh-food drawers spoiling early — The drawers sit furthest from the vents and warm first.
- NEAR MISS — water is pooling under the drawers — That is a blocked defrost drain and the water-leak page covers it properly.
What actually fails on these models, in order
- Condenser coil blanketed in dust — Ranked first because it is the one cause that develops on every unit in every kitchen and the one owners never look at.
- Sealed-system or compressor fault — Last, and the reason this order matters: it is the least common cause here and the only one that is not an owner fix at all.
- Evaporator fan motor failed or obstructed — The fan sits behind the freezer rear panel. When it stops, cold is still being made and none of it moves, so the freezer stays cold and the fresh-food side does not.
- Condenser fan stalled — Same consequence as a dusty coil and a different cause: heat stays in the condenser and the system loses capacity.
Check in this order, and why
- Start with what the ranking makes most likely — This order exists because the cheap causes are also the likely ones: one of the four named above can be settled on AFS models before a tool comes out.
- Check the fresh-food vents are not blocked by food — Boxes against the rear vents stop airflow exactly as ice does.
- Listen at the freezer for the evaporator fan — It separates the two likeliest causes before any tool comes out, and it costs nothing.
- Feel whether the condenser is hot or merely warm — A coil that is barely warm while the compressor runs is a coil not receiving heat, which changes the answer.
Before you take any panel off
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off, and the compressor circuit on a refrigerator is live whenever the plug is in. Leave the door switch wired exactly as it is: it cuts power to the evaporator fan for a reason, and defeating it puts a moving blade behind a panel you are reaching past.

When to call a technician
Call once the owner-side checks above are clean, and call immediately if the fault turns out to be on the sealed system: refrigerant work is licensed work and the tools for it are not owner tools. Call without finishing the list if you see oil at the compressor or smell burning, because oil outside the tubing means the system is open and every hour it runs after that costs more to put right.
