The short answer
A MOTR machine that does nothing at all is usually unpowered, unlatched or locked rather than broken. The supply for this machine is hidden in the cabinet above it. Three of the five causes below cost nothing to rule out and need no tools. There is one number under the MOTR label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- The display is lit but nothing happens on start — Supply is fine, so look at the door and the lock.
- It died the instant the door was closed — That sequence is the signature of a failed door switch taking the fuse with it.
- Some panel buttons respond and others do nothing — A membrane fault rather than a board fault.
- It works sometimes and not others — That intermittency points at the supply or the door rather than at the control.
- NEAR MISS — it starts and then stops after a few seconds — That is a door or a thermal fault and it needs a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the MOTR family
- The socket inside the cabinet above the machine — First on this platform: the supply for an over-the-range machine is hidden, and a tripped or switched socket there produces a dead appliance with no other symptom. It leads here because everything about an over-the-range installation, the height, the weight on the hinge and the hidden socket, is different from a countertop machine.
- The door not latching properly — Second: no microwave will start with its door switches unmade, and a latch hook that has worn or a door that has dropped will hold the door closed without operating them. A door that needs a push to start the machine has already told you the answer.
- The machine already running a programme — Third: a paused or delayed programme will ignore a start instruction, and neither state is obvious at a glance.
- An extension lead or adaptor not making properly — Fourth: it carries a heavy load intermittently, and poor contact produces a machine that works sometimes and not others.
- A control lock, a timer that was set but never started, or a delay — Last: all three leave a machine that lights up and does nothing, and all three clear from the panel without tools.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Test the socket with something else — It is the commonest cause of a dead microwave and it takes ten seconds.
- Open and close the door firmly, then try again — A latch that has worn will hold the door without making the switches.
- Isolate the machine for a minute and restore it — It resets the control and resolves a real share of unresponsive panels for nothing.
- Check the consumer unit for a tripped breaker or RCD — Kitchen circuits trip together, and the fault may be another appliance.
- Press each panel button in turn and note which respond — A dead area on the panel is a membrane fault, not a board fault.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On this platform there is no check worth doing that cannot wait the thirty seconds it takes to isolate the machine properly.

When to call a technician
Sockets, doors, locks and timers are yours. On these models the line falls at the case itself, because of the capacitor behind it. Call without working through anything at all for a machine that died the instant a door was closed, which means a switch has failed out of sequence.
