The short answer
The door of an MM machine is not a cover: it is the part that contains the field, and it works as one assembly of hooks, hinge, seal face and screening. A countertop door is opened and closed thousands of times and its hooks are the part that wears.
What you observe on these models
- The door has to be pushed to make the machine start — The latch is no longer pulling the door into the frame.
- Grease or residue visible on the flat face around the opening — That face is part of how the door works, not just a surface to wipe.
- Dark or pitted marks on the frame — Energy has been finding a path it should not.
- The door rattles or moves when it is closed — Worn hooks or a dropped hinge, and both are visible.
- NEAR MISS — the door is fine but the machine does not heat — Read the heating page for this family instead.
Causes, most likely first on the MM family
- Food residue and grease on the sealing face and in the channel around it — First on this platform: the flat land around the cavity opening and the channel in the door are part of how the door contains the field.
- Worn latch hooks and a door that no longer pulls square — Second: the hooks take the whole force of every closing, and once they are rounded the door sits against its frame without being held into it.
- A hinge that has sagged and dropped the door — Third: a door that touches the frame at the bottom corner before it touches at the top has moved, and the seal face is no longer parallel to the cavity.
- Burn marks or arcing at the door frame or on the waveguide cover — Fourth: any scorching around the opening means energy has been finding a path it should not.
- A bent frame, a damaged door panel or a cracked window — Last: a door is a single engineered assembly and it is not repairable in pieces.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Look at the sealing face and the channel around the cavity opening — Residue and grease there hold the door off and are the only part of this list you can fix yourself.
- Close the door slowly and watch where it touches first — A door that meets the frame at one corner before the other has dropped on its hinge.
- Look for scorching, pitting or burn marks around the opening and on the waveguide cover — Any of those ends the inspection: stop using the machine.
- Check the latch hooks for rounding and the door for play when closed — Movement in a closed door means the hooks are no longer holding it in.
- Do not test for leakage with a consumer meter — Those meters are not accurate enough to clear a machine, and a door assembly is replaced rather than adjusted.
Before you open anything
Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. Treat that as the first step of every check below that involves a panel, a grille or a cover.

When to call a technician
Cleaning the seal face and the channel around the opening is the whole of owner work on a microwave door. On these models the line falls at the outer case, and everything behind it. Call without working through anything at all for a socket or plug that heats under load, which is a fire risk rather than a nuisance.
