The short answer for D models
When an Avanti D microwave refuses to start, the panel tells you which half of the list to read. A dead display is a supply problem; a lit display that ignores the start button is a lock, a latch or a setting the oven is waiting on.
What you actually observe
- The display is lit but start does nothing — Power is fine and something is inhibiting the start.
- It works from cold and refuses when warm — A thermal protector, often because the vents are blocked.
- It starts only if the door is pressed hard — A marginal interlock, and that is a safety fault rather than an inconvenience.
- A beep when start is pressed and nothing further — The oven has acknowledged the press and refused it for a reason.
- Some panel buttons respond and others do not — A failing membrane rather than anything behind it.
- NEAR MISS — the breaker trips every time — Then this is an electrical fault and it is not a start fault at all.
The ranking for this family
- Door not latching fully — Ranked first because three interlocks sit behind the latch in series and any one of them stops the oven while the display looks normal.
- Child lock engaged — Second because it is easily set by accident on a touch panel and the oven then ignores every press.
- Start button or panel membrane failing — Some buttons respond and others do not, which is the tell.
- Control board failure — Last on the list and reached only by exclusion.
Check in this order, and why
- Where to begin — The order below follows the ranking rather than the machine: two of the four causes above cost nothing to rule out on D models, so they come first.
- Look for a lock indicator and clear it — A locked oven ignores every press by design, so nothing else can be tested while it is set.
- Open and close the door firmly and listen for the latch — A positive click is the latch making. No click is your answer and it is the commonest one.
- Look at the display before pressing anything — Dead, lit, locked or prompting are four different faults and the display distinguishes them for free.
The one rule that governs this appliance
Safety
Unplug the microwave and leave it unplugged. The high-voltage capacitor inside can hold a lethal charge long after the power is off and it does not discharge on its own, so the outer case must not come off for any reason — not to look, not to clean, not to check a connection. Every fault that lives behind that case is a service call. Never defeat a door interlock and never run the oven with a damaged door.
