The short answer
A SGD dryer that is completely dead is usually unpowered, unlatched or protected rather than broken. A gas dryer still needs mains power for the drum, the controls and the igniter. Work from the supply inwards and four of the five causes need no tools. There is one number under the SGD label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- The dryer is dead and the washer runs — Mains power reaches the cabinet, so the fault is past that point.
- Both machines dead — The supply, not the dryer.
- Dryer dead, washer working — Half the supply, a fuse, or the door switch.
- It hums but the drum does not move — A seized drum or a jammed blower.
- NEAR MISS — it runs but does not heat — Read the heat page for this family instead.
Causes, most likely first on the SGD family
- The breaker and the socket — First on this platform: no power means no tumble and no ignition.
- Door latch and door switch — Second: the catch has to operate a switch, not merely hold the door. A door that needs a firm push before the machine responds has told you which it is doing.
- Thermal fuse — Third, and it interrupts the motor circuit on many machines.
- Control lock or a cycle not selected — Fourth: both leave a machine that lights up and ignores you, and both clear from the panel without tools.
- Start switch, timer or control — Last: do not go looking behind the burner panel: on a gas machine that is technician work.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Check the breaker and the socket — A gas dryer needs mains power for everything except the heat itself.
- Close the door firmly and listen for the switch — Same as any dryer.
- Consider a thermal fuse if drying had been deteriorating — It kills the motor circuit on many machines.
- Cycle the breaker fully off and on — Completely dead means no supply; tumbling without heat means half of it.
- Stop before any burner panel — On a gas machine, that boundary is absolute.
Before you open anything
Safety
If you smell gas: do not switch anything on or off, leave the building, and call the gas utility or 911 from outside. Do not look for the leak yourself. Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel.

When to call a technician
Sockets, breakers, doors, locks and cycle selection are yours on a stacked gas laundry centre dryer. On these models the line falls at the heating circuit and the protection devices in it. Call without working through anything at all for a motor that hums without turning, which should be switched off rather than retried.
