The short answer
A FLD dryer that tumbles without drying is an airflow problem far more often than a failed heater. These machines go into the tightest spaces, which is exactly where a duct gets crushed. That is why the first two checks below cost nothing and why the element sits fourth rather than first. There is one number under the FLD label in the table below, so nothing here depends on which variant you own.
What you observe on these models
- Drying got worse after the machine was last moved — The duct behind it was crushed when it went back.
- Clothes are hot at the edges of the drum and damp in the middle — The load is too big for the air the machine can move.
- Drying times have crept up over a year — Gradual change is lint and duct, not a component.
- The cycle ends on time with the load still damp — Heat protection ending the cycle rather than a heat failure.
- NEAR MISS — the drum does not turn at all — That is a no-start fault and belongs on a different page.
Causes, most likely first on the FLD family
- The duct run behind the machine — First on a front-load compact, because it is installed in the tightest spaces and the duct is usually crushed against the wall the moment the machine is pushed back.
- Lint filter and housing — Second: owners clean the screen and never the slot it sits in, and a felted layer in that housing throttles the machine exactly like a blocked duct.
- Cycle selection, including any air-only or delicate setting — Third, and genuinely common: a machine set to an unheated cycle tumbles perfectly and dries nothing, which reads as a heat failure.
- Thermal fuse or high-limit cut-out — Fourth: opened by restricted airflow rather than failing on its own.
- Element, thermostat or control — Last, and the point at which the back comes off and an owner stops.
Check in this order, and why that order
- Draw the machine out and look at the duct behind it — A crushed elbow against the wall is the single most common finding on this platform.
- Clean the filter and its housing — Free and immediate.
- Weigh or lift the load before and after the cycle — A load that has lost no weight has lost no water, which is a better test than touch.
- Run one medium load instead of a full one — It separates an overloaded drum from a machine that cannot heat.
- Open the door of the cupboard or closet the machine lives in — A dryer with no air to draw recirculates its own exhaust.

Safety
Unplug the appliance or switch off its breaker before removing any panel. A capacitor can hold a charge after the power is off. On this platform there is no check worth doing that cannot wait the thirty seconds it takes to isolate the machine properly.

When to call a technician
Ducts, filters, flaps, sockets and cycle selection are all owner work on a front-load dryer, and between them they account for most no-heat calls. On these models the line falls at anything inside the cabinet, on a machine that is live while it runs. Call without working through anything at all for a machine that stops and restarts on every load, because a protection device is doing the work.
